The book explains the LATEX macro package for the TEX text formatting program, presenting a complete description for beginners, going on to more advanced and specialized features. Files for LATEX processing contain the actual text plus markup and programming command, al as ASCII text, something tat makes them portable to every computer system. The LATEX/TEX program processes these files to produce high-quality typeset results, especially for complicated mathematics.

LATEX offers the user all the features of any text processing system: automatic section formatting, numbering of sections, figures, tables and equations, table of contents, lists of figures and tables, cross-referencing to the numbers, bibliography, keyword index, colour, inclusion of illustrations. Best LaTeX book I know of 3. Oktober 1999

This book is the best LaTeX book I know of. Its breadth and depth of information is superior to any other book I know of and the book is easy to understand.

I first reach for _A Guide to LaTeX_, my second choice is _The LaTeX Companion_, my last choice is _LaTeX: A Document Preparation System_.

My advice: buy this book, if it doesn't answer all your questions buy _The LaTeX Companion_.

This latex book is so comprehensible for the simple user with advanced expectations, that you will soon come to understand how difficult to use MS-Word truly is, if you want to do the same advanced typsetting as explained in a simple to follow fashion in this book. And the best: This book guides you as you improve you latex skills and will be a true companion as a reference book.

I'm a new convert to LaTeX, having tried to write my own macro sets for TeX since I started using it around 10 years ago. This book in it's previous versions has been highly recommended, and I must say it quickly gets you into the thick of things. The book has been very helpful and seems to cover everything, but I still had some problems with it. For instance there is a typesetting glitch on the bottom of page 374 that is very jarring, when you consider this book is fundamentally about doing good (albeit computerized) typesetting. Also the explanation of how to set up an appendix is incomplete and I had to piece it together from other portions of the book. Still, the book covers a lot of ground, and covers it mostly pretty well.
