Kurzbeschreibung

Evil books...Ancient powers...Zombie pigs?

Thomas Grey, reclusive curmudgeon and mage, is having a terrible day.

After a run-in with some less than desirable cultists that worshipped a dimension devouring cockroach god, he's a little down on his luck and facing a criminally overdue electrical bill. So when he's offered a job by the supernatural overlord of the sleepy little cow-town of Hanford to find a book, and get paid with real money, he just can't refuse. It's a book, how bad could it be?

Unfortunately, it just happens to be an ancient book of world-shattering power that any mad cultist or evil wizard would sell their mothers to get a chance at, and Thomas finds himself in the middle of a wild conspiracy to recover the book and awaken a monstrous cosmic evil hell-bent on devouring reality as we know it.

Aided by his aging, spell-slinging mentor Hack and his best friend Swift, who may or may not be an angel of death, it is up to Thomas to find the book, save the world, and collect a check before his power gets shut off. Well, and try not to die in the process, of course.

Looks like it might have been a bad day to have gotten out of bed, but a guy has to get paid.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Matthew Davis was born in the California cow-town of Hanford, and, well, he still lives there. When not busy slaving in the salt mines, or working on finishing his History degrees, or...He's busy. A lot. And he writes, too. When time provides for such luxuries. His first book, "Run the Day" is the beginning of an urban, paranormal fantasy series set in and around the valley he calls home. He also blogs (www.thegreyspace.com), tweets (@greydevil13), and is gravely serious about making sure to find time to listen to music and read as often as able.

Thomas Grey is a small-town man with a less than normal brain. Grey was born with "extra senses," and the ability to see "truth" around him (often in the form of malevolent entities.) Not only has he learned to live with this horrible affliction, he's used it to see people (and things not quite human)for what they really are.

He's a man with a single employer; a strong character who utilizes Grey's powers & love of investigation to find a very special book called the "Libro Nihil." It seems some really odd things have been happening around the small town of Hanford, a town of significant history of reported paranormal activity. (Hanford really exists, believe it or not.)

Thomas immediately runs into trouble, as there are Other individuals looking for this book. It turns out that the book is directly tied to the odd happenings around town, and the book is capable of being used for seemingly evil & malevolent purposes. The Book is so powerful, it's rumored to bring about ogres, monsters, ghosts, bizarre zombie scenes, hallucinations, unimaginable clarity, misunderstood creatures who live in the sewers and jails, and an ultimate evil hell-bent on destroying mankind.

A particularly powerful character with close ties to Thomas is revealed and introduced late in the book, and their initial meeting leaves Thomas more than shaken. Thomas wasn't expecting this...

The book is best classified as "a dark fictional mystery," and it's directly related to the supernatural. The author offers a story based on the premise that magic exists, and is just overlooked and unused by most of us. The paranormal entities and visions which haunt Thomas are bizarre, and influenced by abstract-horror. The characters are easily identifiable, making that aspect of the story even better & easier to follow. They have major differences in personality, as well as ultimate incentives.

From the beginning of the book until the end, you see the world through the eyes of Thomas Grey...and the eyes of Thomas Grey regularly see things most of us would like to forget.

In closing, I read this book in one sitting, the same day I bought it. It was dark & rainy outside, and this story was a fantastic addition to my day. The Author should be proud of this story, and the imagery it produces in the minds of readers. He paints original pictures with bizarre & terrifying themes, and that's what I was looking for.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Fast Paced Adventure of the Strange and Magical 29. Januar 2013

Nothing short of an incredible story that grabs you and holds your attention from the very first page.

While there are so many wonderful things to touch upon in this amazing tale of a very -very- bad day, I would like to share what kept me chomping at the bit for the next page from the moment I started reading "Run the Day". The gripping writing style aside, I found the tale's greatest strength to be that it is believable.

The author presents a wonderfully fantastic world filled with incredible and horrifying beings in a way that expresses itself very real and very believable. In my mind's eye I could see this world clearly without having to recreate an entire cosmos. The world is much the same as the world I see peering out my window...with only a few very important, very essential, and very dark things scripted into its being.

The Hero, Thomas Grey, is relatable. He has access to incredible magical power, and yet he isn't a spell slinging John McClain-styled super hero. He is thoughtful and bears an incredible weight on his shoulders. He is aware of his mortality, the weight of knowing hidden truths, and his own personal limits. And he also doesn't outright go looking for trouble despite trouble having a knack for finding him. The hero is real enough to be ourselves, or someone we know.

Equally driving is the supporting cast of misfits at Thomas Grey's side. I absolutely loved the character development not only with Thomas, but with those around him. The supporting cast matters. They're important. And they add much more to the story than fire power for Thomas's fight. They are a unique group of individuals with their own stories. Just as our hero, they are all real and believable.

As a story which takes place in a modern society weaved with elements of myth and fantasy, the system of magic and the supernatural was well described and well presented. Magic, in this story, is an intentional element that must be handled with care, and cannot be whipped out of the air and forced to take the shape of bunnies and pyrotechnics by any random idiot. This is why I appreciated the author taking the time to share with us the confines in which magic worked in this world. Important elements were touched, but it didn't bog down the reader with information that would goes over the head and lose us in unnecessary complexity. The system for magic and the supernatural also added to the believability in explaining why -if such power and powerful beings existed- we don't witness open supernatural warfare as strange and wicked beings vied openly for control.

I cannot recommend this book enough!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Noir,Magic, Evil Tomes, And A Few Laughs 27. März 2013
Von Wyatt Figueroa - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

After rereading Stephen King's first novel and reading about all the issues he had in writing it I think that Matt Davis has written a great first book. Yes it does echo other writings in the genre but what book doesn't owe it's existence to the great elder gods that game before. Every body and their mother steals from Lovecraft and we praise them for how creatively they pulled off the theft. Jesus, I just made a reference to the elder gods two sentences before. What Davis has done with his first novel is bring together noir detective stories with the language he uses to describe people and places, a healthy dose of Lovecraft, added humor to the mix, and made it all his own. Sure there could have been more vivid descriptions of the main character and the places all the characters haunt, the writer has been haunting these same places all his life, but to agree with an earlier review that I read I think that the talent is there, and we will see a great evolution in Davis' work in the second, third, and however many books he decides to write about these characters and this world. I enjoy a story where the main character is not super human, does not have the ability to dodge every punch and bullet fired at him. He gets the s*** knocked out of him a few times, he bleeds, he is described here as some one who is on the ragged edge after the things he has seen. Unlike Lovecraft's characters he has risen from these experiences to get knocked down again. I have and will continue to recommend this fun, fast paced novel to all my poor friends who don't have time to waste their money on a dud because I had a total blast with it. I think we should have more stories where we have a blast, don't have to be serious, and there isn't some sappy Hallmark message at the end. Can't wait for the next one.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Hanford's Magic Man 14. März 2013
Von nancy workman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I've been an avid, voracious reader for 56 years, so I am somewhat hard to please. I am delighted to say that this thoroughly original and very entertaining little book pleased me greatly.
Thomas Gray is a regular guy with the added benefit of being able to shift to another spectrum. His magic fits him naturally like any other finely honed skill set a person could have. It is his vocation.
His sardonic quips had me laughing out loud and left me wanting more.
The supporting characters are also well drawn and add to the richness of the story about a very bad day in which he has to save the world several times. I especially liked the housekeeper and her wayward son. I hope to see them in future Thomas Gray stories.
Setting this story in Hanford only adds to the verisimilitude for me, as I lived there many years ago. Davis got the flavor of Hanford exactly right. Kind of your typical San Joaquin Valley small town, that doesn't see itself that way.
Run the Day is enjoyable in a way I haven't seen since The Hitchhiker's Guide. That it kept my interest throughout, AND cracked me up is very high praise, coming from me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Looking for magic in an ordinary town? 6. März 2013
Von Kaila Wolfe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I had to read this over several days, which I rarely do. Each time I set my kindle down, I felt compelled to pick it right back up in order to stay in a place where there is still magic. Hanford is indeed a real place. A perfect backdrop for a story so odd, entertaining, and believable. Who really knows what is going on in their hometown?
I look forward to reading this again, all at once. It is a journey best taken in one fell swoop. Additionally, I look forward to more stories from this author, who was able to capture the readers attention immediately.
Take the time to read this book. It was definitely worth reading. The characters come to life, the scenery becomes reality, and suddenly, the reader is ensconced in a place where magic is still alive.
