as enjoyable as a cup of great tea 29. Dezember 2009
Von Haisheng Luo - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Being a tea drinker since childhood, I consider myself a tea lover. But very little did I know of tea culture before reading this book. The author shared his experience of traveling many tens of thousands of miles to tea farms in this book. There are also stories of how different kinds of tea got their names and knowledge of how each different kinds of teas are made, tips of preparing teas... I love the pictures and maps in the book too... it's like a cup of good tea that the aroma lingering even after you finish drinking it.

True expertise....but more a pamphlet than a book 31. März 2010
Von Huoguo Fengzi - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I have been a fan of the author's tea shop and an admirer of his tea knowledge and taste for many years, but I must confess to being quite disappointed in this book. The content there is is good, but at a very slim sixty-something pages this looks and reads more like a short pamphlet than a book. From someone who seems to be an authority, I was hoping for something far more comprehensive...and at $19, longer and covering more teas, history, etc.---or alternatively, a larger book with much bigger, more varied photos. This is a nice quick reference guide to a handful of teas, but I was expecting more.

Short But Sweet 22. Dezember 2011
Von Jason O. Walker - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
In centuries past, it took Western tea traders decades to figure out that the same plant could produce black, green, and wulong tea. The difference came in the harvest and processing. Fortunately, the modern reader can pick up Roy Fong's The Great Teas of China and learn how some of the most treasured teas on earth come to be.

Fong's book tells the stories of teas' journeys. You almost get the impression that the book is written from the tea leaf's perspective. Few of the popular books on tea go into such detail on when teas are harvested, and how they are processed.

Along the way, Fong relates how he came to be a part of the tea story. He includes anecdotes of meeting farmers, smelling rooms full of fresh tea being processed, and his first experiences of tasting teas.

The book is interesting from a production perspective, especially considering Roy has begun work on creating his own California tea farm. From the tea drinker's and tea shopper's perspective, you are somewhat at a loss as to what to do with the book. Does knowing the production stages a tie guan yin tea goes through help one buy a better tea? Can a tea audience taste a tea, knowing which stage of harvest or production most shaped the nuances they enjoy in their cup?

Aside from the enjoyment of learning it provides, The Great Teas of China validates Roy Fong's stance as a patriarch of the US loose leaf tea renaissance and the role of the Imperial Tea Court in that movement.

If you can't study tea in China read this book 25. Dezember 2009
Von Alfa - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
The best way to learn about Chinese tea is to visit tea farms and tea shops in China and learn first-hand. If you can't do that, start by reading this book. Master tea merchant Roy Fong has spent 20 years traveling throughout China to study tea, buy it, and bring it back to his customers at Imperial Tea Court in San Francisco. In this book he shares much of what he has learned about several of his favorite teas, including details of where and how they're grown and produced. This book is totally different from most other tea books because it's written by someone who knows as much about creating great tea as about drinking it. It also has a lot of interesting anecdotes from Fong's travels and business experience, as well as a useful glossary of Chinese tea terms. A great introduction to Chinese tea.

an unusual offering 30. Dezember 2009
Von Alpine Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Roy Fong's book offers a limited but highly revealing snapshot of how tea is admired, prepared, marketed and enjoyed by the people who developed tea for the world's consumption. I believe it's rare for a merchant to give so many of these secrets away. Through his travels to distant tea districts in China, Roy discovered important details about how excellent teas are brought to market. He shares these precious tidbits with the reader. Immediately after reading, I had to steep a pot of puehr.
