Das Buch war eigentlich nur für eine Arbeit an der Uni gedacht. Da ich es nirgendwo auftreiben konnte, habe ich es mir hier gekauft. Eigentlich wollte ich nur die Kapitel lesen, die ich unbedingt brauchte, aber dann fand ich das Buch einfach so gut und interessant, dass ich es komplett gelesenen habe. Alle die Interesse an Geschichte haben und mal eine neues Thema erforschen wollen, sind mit dem Buch sehr gut bedient. Trotz englischer Sprache leicht verständlich. Auch Liebhaber der amerikanischen Geschichte, der Geschichte Kanadas und Indianerfans kommen auf ihre Kosten. Sachlich und interessant verfasst. Empfehlenswert!

Translated from French into English by Phyllis Aronoff and Howard Scott, Gilles Havard's The Great Peace Of Montreal Of 1701: French-Native Diplomacy In The Seventeenth Century focuses on how the persistent, bloody, and often desolating wars between the French and their Native allies on the one side, and the Iroquois confederacy on the other was brought to a conclusion in the summer of 1701. 1,300 represents of forty First Nations (which ranged from the Maritimes to the Great Lakes and from James Bay to southern Illinois) met with the French at Montreal and, after a month-long ceremony, signed "The Great Peace of Montreal" which ended the Iroquois wars. The treaty, Gilles Havard persuasively argues, was the culmination of the French colonial strategy of native alliances and adaptation to Native political customs. The treaty process illustrates the extend of cultural interchange between the French and their Native allies and the crucial role the Native Americans would later play in the French conflicts with the Iroquois and the British. The Great Peace Of Montreal Of 1701 is a scholarly and invaluable contribution to both Canadian history and Native American studies.

Le sujet est sans doute bien trop spécialisé pour moi, pauvre amateur.
L'auteur aborde principalement la question de la diplomatie entre les Francais et les Améridiens (ceux de la grande alliance de l'Ouest ou les Iroquois) entre apres la destruction de la Huronie ~1650 et la Grande Paix de Montréal de 1701. Mais il a tendance a ne pas préciser le contexte plus que ca. Et meme apres 2 tres bons bouquins sur le sujet, moi, je m'y perds un peu.
C'est donc a la fois trop précis (les noms de tous les participants, une foule de détails hauts en couleur) et pas assez (pour le contexte). Des détails, mais pas utiles pour le néophyte, car il me manque une connaissance approfondie du contexte pour apprécier ce travail (et peut-etre que si je l'avais, ce ne serait pas non plus assez détaillé, en fait).
L'auteur a aussi un peu tendance a répéter toujours les meme choses dans plusieurs chapitres (ou peut etre qu'il se passe plusieurs fois le meme genre d'évenements) et des fois, on a l'impression qu'il délaye son sujet...
Par contre la description de la facon dont les Francais se sont "pliés" aux coutumes indiennes pour leur diplomatie est passionnante. C'est tres bien rendu, et bien expliqué.
Autre plus, la reproduction du traité de Montréal, ou tous les chefs de tribus ont signé avec leur pictogrammes (souvent des dessins d'animaux), avec une explication pour certains des pictogrammes.
Moi ca, j'adore. Il n'y a pas assez de livres qui fournissent des copies lisibles de sources historiques primaires.
Tout de suite, on se sent beaucoup plus "proche" de l'évenement.
