We all love beautiful books that talk to us and this new, first edition of Great Journeys, Smart Travel by Lonely Planet is a stunner that is a large format book, think coffee table sized that showcases the beautiful full color photos inside.
I like a book to speak to me, to invite me to pick it up, and then decide if it's a keeper, or great resource, or one that goes on the shelf, this book quite immediately let me know it's value, from it's photos of beauty to it's prose like narratives. Like in the chapter that begins...
Why do we travel? To broaden our minds? To get away from ourselves and other people ( or conversely to `find' ourselves)? or take the chapter on Overland Travel's first offering - The Hippy Trail, that the founders of Lonely Planet started on, from London through Istanbul and Teheran and Kabul, down to Kashmir, Delhi, and ending in Goa, a true hippy paradise friends have told me about. You'll see maps, large ethnic photos of those along the way, and Essential Experiences, like Relaxing on Paradise Beach in Mykonos ( which I remember from the 60's too ) or Pai, northern Thailand or Kuta in Bali( ahhhh I want to go..). Each page is large with colorful photos with descriptions like the Pokhara, an area in Nepal, a mountain retreat and the welcoming character, face painted in bright green, crown of jewels, fingers with long nails or gold.
The world is well covered in the book, take the chapter on Road, as it's called, I saw photo narratives on Icefields parkway, from Jasper to Banff, Canada, it even made Winter look inviting again. The Essential Experience was a dawn view of Lake Louise ( which i remember the turquoise hued lake's reflection one day there ). At the bottom of the page has some helpful and interesting information: Distance 232 KM, Countries Covered - Canada, Ideal Time Commitment - three to four days, Essential Tip - Drive in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting wildlife.
Each chapter really is a book unto itself, and the themes are well chosen. This is a beautiful book that you'll savor...
