If you're developing software that will be used by a large group of people, you need to give it a good- looking front end--in Java 2, that means you have to use Swing. An excellent resource, Graphic Java 2: Mastering the JFC, Third Edition (Volume 2: Swing) takes on the Swing components one at a time and shows you how to incorporate them into attractive, efficient programs.
In many ways, Graphic Java 2 is a cookbook. You search the table of contents or index for a reference to the kind of problem you want to solve, then examine the author's examples for the solution (or at least some clues to it). This is the book to turn to if you're wondering how to implement the JComboBox Key Selection Manager interface (which enables users to select items in a combo box) or compare the various ways of making the JTree component into a file browser. Those are just two of hundreds of examples in David Geary's book.
While most examples don't serve any practical purpose by themselves, they do clearly illustrate how a specific aspect of Swing works. It's easy to adapt the details presented here into your own programs. Mit Fug und Recht lässt sich wohl sagen, dass man an diesem Buch nicht vorbeikommt, wenn
man tief in die Geheimnisse von Swing eintauchen will. Haufenweise Beispiele und starker
Einsatz von Design Patterns macht das Buch auch zu einer guten Einführung in die
fortgeschrittenen Techniken der OOP, abgesehen davon, dass es wohl der umfangreichste und
detaillierteste Einblick in Suns Swing API ist, den man sich nur vorstellen kann.
Konsequent geht der Autor außerdem auf die Anwendung des Model-View-Controller-Patterns ein,
und trägt somit auch Design- und Wartbarkeitsaspekten Rechnung.
Kurzum: Das Buch ist jeden einzelnen Cent wert.
Man muss jedoch anmerken, dass ein relativ gutes Verständis von Java im Allgemeinen und
der AWT Klassen im Besonderen vorausgesetzt werden. Eine Erklärung von Interfaces,
abstrakten Klassen geschweige denn LayoutManagern, etc. wird man in diesem Buch vergeblich
suchen. Für alle die diese Kenntnisse noch benötigen, kann ich uneingeschränkt das "Handbuch der
Java Programmierung" von Guido Krüger, Addison-Wesley empfehlen, um für Swing ausreichend gerüstet zu sein.

This book is the only book you will ever need ( aside from the JavaDoc ) to learn Swing properly and effectively. The stuff I can write now after reading this book makes my friends and coworkers heads spin. The sections on the JTrees and JTables is fantastic. I wish the coverage on the HTML ToolKit / Parser stuff was more fleshed out but it points you in the right directions. [Maybe he'll write an addendum and post it somewhere :-)) ] The book is extremely well written contextwise ; you never feel like you are getting lost. It even covers modelling notation. I'm going to buy his next book(s) whenever they come out. I don't even have to read the writeups ; this guy is the best writer for tech stuff I have ever seen and the book is a bargain at any price.

Obwohl dieses Buch 1600 Seiten umfasst, werden manche Details nicht ausreichend erlaeutert. Es eignet sich aber fuer den Einstieg in die komplexe Swing-Umgebung. Die zahlreichen Beispiele helfen einen mit Swing zu programmieren.
