From growing up in a blue collar family in one of the most dangerous areas in France to having a successful career as the head chef in a luxury hotel on the French Riviera at the age of 23, to teaching culinary arts at the University of British Columbia in Canada, my life is punctuated with stories that, even to me, sound somewhat incredible.

Along this path, I have been inspired by people around me who have contributed to my journey and shaped me into who I am today. This first book of my series, Child to Chef Recipe Memoir, is about my grandmother Augusta, who was instrumental to my decision of becoming a chef and also about my discovery that food makes people happy.

With A Gourmand in Training, if I can inspire young adults to overcome their own challenges and live their dreams, I will consider this book a great achievement.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Eric Arrouzé is a French chef living in Vancouver, Canada. Chef Eric spent his early years working in fine dining establishments throughout France, including as Executive Chef in a five star hotel near Monte Carlo when he was only 23 years old. Before moving to Canada, his career also took him throughout Switzerland, England, and Luxembourg. Since 2002, Chef Eric has been teaching various courses, such as French Regional Cuisine, at the University of British Columbia. He also runs a widely recognized online gourmet recipe, culinary travel, and video cooking instruction website, 911cheferic.com. Recently, Chef Eric has become a part of the world famous Chaine des Rotisseurs. Chef Eric´s contributions to the advancement of culinary education have been recognized in publications such as The New York Times, The Calgary Herald, and Saveur magazine.

This is the intimate story of Eric, who as a young boy, already knew that he was destined to be a gourmand.

It's very enjoyable reading, because you can feel his angst and his glee, as he faces his challenges and overcomes them.

I would highly recommend this heart-warming book for anyone wanting to be inspired, to know that dreams can come true; and it will interest Foodies, who can live vicariously through Eric's stories.

I really look forward to his next book of adventures.

Author Eric Arrouzé deserves a large audience for this first volume of his memoir with recipes. His story is wholesome, funny, delicious and inspiring -- a testament to one boy's dogged pursuit of a dream. A real treat for foodies of all ages. And instructional for those amateur chefs who want to improve the meals they create in their own kitchens. The book leaves me with a hunger for more!

It is a very well written book. The author manages to create a beautiful image of his childhood including the passion that was kindled in him for good food and the art of good cooking, as well as the pastoral images of farm life as well as all the people who influenced him.

I must say I was a bit shocked when it ended, as I completely missed the aspect that this was Book 1 :) The reason this surprised me I was only 75% through on Kindle. That's when I realised that the remaining part of the book was recipes of the food that he had spoken about. Nonetheless I cannot really complain as I am sure the recipes would be useful for a lot of people.

I am looking forward to the next in this series.

An entertaining heart warming story of a young boy who seems to have few skills - as defined by school life - but whose fascination with food and cooking comes to life on the written page. He tells of his upbringing through to becoming 16 and will tell other tales in subsequent books. A shae - I'd like to read the next volume straight away!

My only criticism - hence 4 rather than 5 stars - was there was no indication that the last 30% of the book would consist of recipes so I was disappointed when the book came to a sudden close as I was assuming I had many more chapters of his life yet to enjoy.
