Produktbeschreibungen

From Booklist

Although the text is spare, like a chapter book, and the jacket is sweet, sad, and rather young looking, this historical novel actually packs quite a devastating punch. It's 1934, the midst of the Depression, and fifth-grader Wanda Malinski's family has been hit hard. Her once lighthearted, joke-telling father is now angry, morose, and cynical. Although he tries not to, he often takes his frustrations out on his taciturn teenage son, Walter, whom he threatens to send away to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In a series of interconnected episodes relayed in Wanda's artless words, readers see the effects of poverty on the family--the bullies that make fun, the physical hurt of not having enough to eat, the embarrassment of wet clothes freezing on the line, and the sadness of a father and son growing increasingly alienated. A devastating accident nearly tears the family apart, until the community rallies to help family members put their lives back together. The ending brings surprising promise, but even so there are few soft edges in this poignant, unaffected narrative, which speaks to the insidious way deprivation can make us lose sight of the things we hold dear. Stephanie Zvirin

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5Wanda, an observant and perceptive fifth grader, gives readers a firsthand account of the effects of powerlessness and grinding poverty on everyday life and family relationships. The Depression has left Pa out of work and angry at his inability to provide for his family. He and 15-year-old Walter are having an especially difficult time with one another, and then Walter dies in an accident, leaving no recourse for healing the rift. The Polish-American community then asserts itself to care for a family whose economic and emotional resources are depleted. The narrative captures the poignancy of human hurt and longing, yet startles our modern sensibilities. This is a father who never questions his right to slap a defiant son or banish him to a rat-infested cellar, yet he is not uncaring. The family roles are authentic to the period, not subject to revisionist history. Occasional pencil drawings suit the serious tone of the text, and the illustrations help to realize the unnamed mill town in which the story is set and create a feel for the era. This is a sobering but hopeful glimpse into a very different past, peopled with characters whose emotions are very much like our own. A moving first novel by an author to watch.Faith Brautigam, Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin, IL

The book Goodbye Walter Malinski is a wonderful example of how a poor, Polish famiy survived in America during the Great Depression. It also displays how a family coped with the loss of a loved one. This is a book that is short and sweet. My opinion of this book is very high, but to discover the exiting events you must read it your self.

This book is called Goodbye Walter Malinski. By: Helen Recorvtits. This story takes place in a small town in America. The time of this story takes place in 1934. The season of this town is winter.

Some of the characters in this story are, Walter, Wanda, and Pa. Pa can get cruel a lot. Walter is the finest brother in America. Wanda also is a nice sister. Walter is 16 years old. He also likes to do stuff dangerous. Wanda loves to dance a lot with her mom. The problem in this story is that Pa loses his job and doesn't have a lot of money. Pa also gets angry with Walter a lot.

My favorite part of this story is at the end because it shocks me. The story starts when pa loses his job. I actually like this book. I loved the author because she gave a lot of background and detail. I also liked the illustrator because it had a lot of exiting pictures. I would recommend this book to a friend because it was thrilling and the author wrote a lot of exiting things in it.
