Synopsis

Renowned dog trainers Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson share their knowledge and skill gained in over twenty-five years experience, focusing on the two areas of most concern to dog owners: effectively changing unwanted behavior and preventing bad behavior with methods that are fun, that work, and make the dog even more loyal to its master. The key ingredient is becoming a good owner, someone who knows how to communicate with patience, praise, and clarity. With this in mind, GOOD OWNERS, GREAT DOGS trains you. As no other dog book has, it teaches you to read canine body language and to give your pet commands with the help of wonderful instructional photographs. With specific tips on housebreaking, food stealing, barking, aggression, and a host of other issues, GOOD OWNERS GREAT DOGS will show you how to give guidance that leads to years of loving, trouble-free companionship.

I have been watching Kilcommons on his weekly cable show "Pet News" (FoxNews Network) for months. And I admit, I used to think I was a real idiot. I thought I could never have a dog because I'd never live a sane life. The dog would take over, chewing everything in sight, barking at everyone it sees, and eventually I'd get evicted. But somewhere deep down I knew I wanted a puppy. I just knew that I would know when I saw the perfect pup. Brian Kilcommons' book proved me right. He showed me how to select the perfect pup for me and he was even kind enough to include instructions in how to raise her! If only babies came with such wonderful books...
Good Owners, Great Dogs is great because it doesn't beat around the bush. Kilcommons tells me how and why to train my dog. I bought the book along with my first puppy, and things are wonderful. Having a puppy changed my life and Good Owners, Great Dogs is giving me the education I need. Frankly, if you haven't done your homework on how to raise your dog, THIS BOOK IS REQUIRED READING.
Criticisms: I felt like Kilcommons tried to incorporate too many tips into such a short book. It's almost too broad at times, and I found myself with a few unanswered questions.

I purchased this book after attending a seminar held by Brian Kilcommons in November of 1997. I have two shepherd crosses and our female was our "special needs" dog in that she displayed some very anti social behaviour, due to fear. Brian's book confirmed my view on dog training in that he does not use physical punishment in training your dog. I wouldn't raise my hand to another adult, child or animal for any reason. He provided excellent suggestions, insight into behaviour, along with interesting and helpful "case studies". I have read numerous books on dog training and the minute I see any mention of training a dog using physical punishment, aggressive behaviour on the owner's part, confinement in an area as punishment for any length of time, etc. I have no use for the book. Brian's book, in addition to being a must for all dog owners, I recommend it to anyone who has a dog, is also an interesting book just to read. Thanks very much Brian. We have too beautiful dogs and they are very well behaved and our "special needs" little darling has replaced her special needs with needs such as all the love, care and attention we can give them.

If more people read this book and took the time to understand dog psychology, instead of operating from their own point of view, I am sure there would be more happy pets and fewer frustrated owners. People often have the right intentions, but lack the information on correct methods to achieve successful results. I have owned quite a few dogs, and made my share of mistakes. Thanks to this book I am having some good results with a new pup. It is to the owner's advantage to learn "dog talk", he is doing HIS best to learn "human". Also, I have found a general understanding of your dog's particular breed characteristics help in selecting the right dog for you. Some dogs are more difficult to raise, and not everyone has the patience, time or space to raise certain breeds, which means the dogs end up in "rescue". This book is excellent in helping to spot potential problems when purchasing your puppy. Heredity plays a big role in personality, trainability and in future results. This book is so well-written, well-illustrated, I would highly recommend it!

To me the book was an interesting example for the US-American approach (I'm German). It's great, the fun-fair-firm motto can't be emphasized too often! Fun! The book shows in every example, how you should adjust your human viewpoint to that of your dog's and not to that of your nerves, even if that's not what we normally do..I loved the example stories, but then I generally want explications. If you want a three step advice, you might have to check the index, but it's all there. Brian Kilcommon treats all dogs fair, I've noticed in other books, that some authors could not refrain from ridiculing small breeds or s.th. The fotos, in my opinion, really reveal that that man loves dogs and is serious about what he tells you because he lives it. I'm going to push this book into the hands of all dog owners I know! With the heartfelt wish, that one dog, whose only wish is his/her owners happiness might be treated better, with more fun to both sides!

As a long time dog owner, who believes strongly in basic manners training for all dogs, I was pleasantly surprised by the common sense and practical approach to dog training that was taken by this author. This book is truly a tutorial. With all phases of the experience covered, from buying that cute little puppy to working with older dogs that require correction, Brian Kilcommons displays an easy knowledge of his subject matter and an ability to communicate his methods to the dog owners. I particularly liked his "train the owner, then train the dog" approach. This book provides the "why" in why certain methods work, not just the "what to do." It contributes to an understanding of what makes your pet tick, and how to understand and communicate with your pet. An educated owner is a happy owner. A happy owner with an educated pet is even better. An excellent and helpful text.
