Brian Froud is an artist with a flair for subtly coloured fantasy. Here he revisits the ethereal territory of his art books Faeries (with Alan Lee) and the comic- gruesome Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book (with Terry Jones)--the latter a Hugo award winner. Froud has a whole philosophy of faeries and their reality which some readers may find a bit woozily "New Age", though traditional lore and Jungian archetypes are also discussed. Symbolising his sense that "good" and "bad" can shift with viewpoint, this large-format volume consists of Good Faeries and Bad Faeries bound back to back, each upside down relative to the other. The fine artwork offers more variety than you might expect from this subject: traditional faeries, grotesques and comic figures (in both sections), horrors, abstract energy patterns, and crowded, symbolic scenes reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch or Richard Dadd. Just as in Paradise Lost, the bad guys can be more fun--from their hauntingly imagined Queen, through nasties like the Bigot Bogey and spirits of various dark emotions, to such familiar metaphorical nuisances as the Computer Glitch, Small Pang of Regret and Bad Hair Day Faery. Crammed with Froud's full-colour paintings, this is an attractive gift book. --David Langford

Filling the gaps,

This one is an adorable book, but unfortunately it is lacking drawings by Lee who was co-creator of "Fairies". While the "good" part of the book mainly contains marvellous and versicoloured pictures which are showing every little detail of Froud's beloved fairies, one gets the impression that fun often left Froud while working on the "bad" part: some drawings are only sketches, depicting in rough lines some ugly countenances, others are really clumsy so that there is no serenity emerging while looking at them. The function of some drawings seems only to be filling the gaps and that is a bad impression one can get of such a gifted artist like Froud. Maybe the book should have been smaller...but those pictures that are worth to look at are representing the flourishing ingenuity of Froud's style!

This is a beautiful and informative book of faery lore. Everyone who loves myths, legends, and magic, should click their Mouse and buy it here immediately, you won't be sorry. As a great admirer of Froud's superlative art I was still stunned by just How Good this book is. The man is a modern Master of faery painting. His name will go down in History alongside 19th century Masters like Rackham, Dadd, Doyle and Dulac. Fans of myth and magic will be pleased to note that the legendary Terri Windling also had a hand in this book. The text has some of the same flavor as her folklore columns in Realms of Fantasy magazine, which someone ought to collect and publish someday. The Froud-Windling connection became apparent when Froud and his faeries showed up as characters in her magical novel "The Wood Wife" and it's thrilling to see these two myth-masters teaming up again. Windling's fans will want to pick up this book and all of Brian Froud's work while Froud's faery fans will be enchanted with "The Wood Wife". The book jacket says they both live in the same town in England. There must be something magical in the water there! Thank you Mr. Froud and Ms. Windling for keeping the Myth Alive in our technology-obsessed world.

After a long wait... finally, another EXCELLENT book by Brian Froud. As Usual, the book is full of BREATHTAKINGLY Beautiful Illustrations and very INFORMATIVE stuff about faeries. If you love faeries, this is ANOTHER MUST HAVE book... if you still don't believe in faeries..THIS is still a MUST BUY book... you will be brought to a magical world that is beyond words.
