If you're anything like me, you might become hesitant when looking to buy HST related materials that had no creative oversight or any approval from Hunter. Over the past few years, people have begun exploiting the HST image, either creating lackluster biographies or simply producing crappy films about him. This graphic novel is an exception. After purchasing my own copy, I feel those involved put careful and deliberate work into respecting the HST image, while providing the ability for Hunter to expand into new forms of media, in this case graphic novels.
I'm pleasantly surprised how well this was put together, and I'm even more delighted how the timeline moves and how the writers move from one timepiece to another. One of the most powerful aspects of Hunter was his ability to convey morals and dignity. Even in the most outlandish circumstances of his life, when it came time to sit down and write about it, he was able to express very real wisdom. The method in which this graphic novel was written, continues to convey realism that Hunter could express in his writing. Clearly the authors didn't pull up a wikipedia page and exploit the Gonzo image, writing a half hearted bio. Time was taken to make sure things fit right and that the right kind of material could be squeezed into these pages. Some aspect remains a little cliche, a lot of traditional Hunter quotes remain, squeezed in, one way or another. Yet, the power that Hunter shared as a journalist and a political visionary, is clearly within the pages.
As far as the art goes, I'm beyond pleased with it. It was interesting being able to study all the various drawings of Hunter aging throughout the book; its clear the Gonzo photograph book, that was publish several years ago, was used to conceptualize backgrounds and the image of young Hunter, where few public photos exist. I spend a lot of my free time doing art, and I'm always working on at least one Hunter Thompson portrait/media. So I can be very picky when it comes to Hunter's image being presented, but this graphic novel goes above and beyond my original expectations.
I want to thank all of those in charge and put effort into the book; its definitely an accomplishment for fans of Hunter Thompson. For all those hesitant to buy, I'd tell you all that is is probably my best HST purchase that he did not have direct oversight with. Thank you for your time.
