Der Autor über sein Buch

Going Faster! published.....finally!
Re-named from "Think Fast" to "Going Faster", this book looks closely at the knowledge and skills contemporary racedrivers need to master to compete at the highest levels. Unlike other racing technique books, this is not one person's view of how race cars should be driven, but a collection of knowledge and experience gained from years of race-winning performance. While not an outline of typical Skip Barber programs, it draws on the experience of the Barber staff to lay out a thoughtful plan for driving race cars as fast as they will go. Flush with over 300 illustrations and photographs this is a book that both novices and professionals should have in thier equipment bags. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Von Bücherkeule TOP 1000 REZENSENT

The present book is based on many years of experience gathered by several teachers at the Skip Barber Racing School, for which this book is the essential required reading. It is, to my knowledge, the most complete and detailed introduction to the techniques required for driving at the limit. Among others, the highlights of this book are the excellent illustrations, both in drawing and as photographs, and insets into the main text written by the many experienced teachers of the school offering a wider perspective (from a racer's point of view) on the explanations in the main body of the text. Of particular value is chapter 7 'From Maps to Laps' where the author approaches the Sebring race track (home to the Skip Barber school) and shows (again using elaborate drawings and suitable photographs) how one approaches a new race track - turn by turn. No other book known to me goes to this level of detail and achieves the same level of insight. All of the material is presented in a well structured form (turning this book also into a good reference), and the writing is always lucid and readable.

The material covered in this book is, in spite of the above praise, standard. Cornering is the corner stone of driving technique, and this is where the book starts. The second part shows how to find the right line on a track and then proceeds to develop the essential techniques of breaking and shifting, the explanation of which makes use of an intermittent chapter on the ways a car moves. Part three takes you from reading a new track (see the praise of chapter 7 above) to the elements of racing. This part does not spare you extensive discussions of what to do in cases things go (badly) wrong. Part four is devoted to the hardware which you use: The tires and the chassis. The concluding fifth part is an outlook into the difficulties anybody will have to face who wishes to make a career in racing. It is in the nature of this topic that here the book peters out, but some focus is preserved as this part returns to previous praise of the author for the Skip Barber school. The formal body at the end of the book contains a few references to American racing resources, a very detailed index (useful if you prefer to use the book as a workbook) and a helpful glossary.

This book is, to my mind, the best introduction to racing available at a reasonable price. The material you need to get started is all there. The book will serve those best who approach driving at the limit for the first time and wish to make it not a matter of trial and error on the track but prefer the informed (and thus in the end safer and less expensive), even if sometimes over-elaborate approach presented in this book.

I race in AutoX and roadracing, and recently became an instructor in a racing license course. I bought and read several books about the subject of auto racing. The 'Drive Faster' book is absolutely excellent and definitely the most thorough read available on how to drive a racecar. It has the background, the theoretic part, the science part, the diagrams and is full of useful and detailed pictures. It's nicely laid out and written in a no-nonsense language. Every chapter is finished with a good conclusions part. As a bonus, there are separate pieces of useful and funny 'war story' experiences of several successful drivers, related to the subject of the chapter.

Drive Faster covers the subject of race driving from the ground up. I would say it's a big mistake not to buy this book if you race cars. I've gone back to read and re-read chapters in this book and everytime I start to think and find something to apply on the track. Best and funniest result was finding 0.5 sec in an AutoX by saying loud to myself "feeding, feeding" like Danny Sullivan suggests in one of his war stories... Best money/performance spent on the car so far. If this sounds like a commercial, so be it. The bottom line is that, unless you're Michael Schumacher, it makes an enourmous amount of sense to spend $100 on a couple on books to unlock driver performance rather than buying that nice anodized alloy performance item to gain laptime... Top marks!

The Perfection of a Genre 10. Dezember 1999

The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.
