Consisting of short, related statements from students, parents, school administrators, and even the troubled shooters themselves, Give a Boy a Gun attempts to give a voice to the countless sides of the school violence issue. Is this novel disturbing and at times difficult to read? Yes, of course it is. But it is also an articulate, well-rounded cross section of the many viewpoints on gun control, peer bullying, and the high school social order since the traumatic events that took place in Littleton, Colorado. While Strasser readily acknowledges that there are no easy solutions to the problem of school violence, this powerful book will be a useful tool for parents and teachers alike in exploring this issue and finding some ways of resolving the tragic escalation of teen violence. Morton Rhue is the pseudonym of the American author Todd Strasser. With his novel "The Wave" he became a well-known best seller author here in Germany. Other famous books he has written are "Can't get there from here" or "Impact Zone". With his new book "Give a Boy a Gun" he will continue with his success.
The story is about two students, Gary Searle and Brendan Lawlor, who have enough of their lives. Every day, for more than two years, they are harassed, beaten up and cursed by most of the jocks an teachers at Middletown-High School - especially by the football players. Armed with guns they steel from a neighbour's collection, Gary an Brendan storm a school dance, booby trap all the doors with homemade bombs and prepared to turn their high school caste system upside down with a violent show of force. When it's all over, Sam Flach, a football player, is alive, but without any hope of a future football career, Gary kills himself and Brendan is in a coma, after being beaten almost to death by other students who manage to disarm him. could this tragedy have been prevented? Who, if anyone, is to blame?
The novel consists of short , related statements from students, parents, school administrators, and even the boys themselves. "Give a Boy a Gun" attemps to give a voice to the countless sides of the school violence issue.
From my point of view this novel has lots of strengths. You can geht an insight into the reasons and backgrounds of the two weird lives of the young boys. Furthermore, at the end of the book the author gives some suggestions how to solve these problems. This book makes young people an school classes think about this development in our society and makes them to understand better the boys' reasons. And perhaps young people think about their own behaviour and how they treat their classmates.
Because of the unusual structure of the book, reading this novel does not become boring. As you will see it's a very unknown way Rhue writes this story and for this reason the novel is very interesting.
But this structure is also the only weakness of this book. It could be confusing and could muddle some people.
I come to the conclusion that this book is not just very entertaining, but also you can learn a lot about the lacks and the particular structure of our society and our government.
