Kurzbeschreibung

GINGER DEAD HOUSE - Ginger Lightley Short-Novel Mystery Series, Book Two - 32,000 words.

Ginger and her fellow Domino Girls pool their funds to buy an old Colonial-style home on the outskirts of town and convert it into a bed and breakfast. The house is rumored to be haunted--which enables them to get the place at a bargain. They name it "Ginger Bread House," banking on Ginger's notoriety as a famous cake baker to bring in the guests. She will provide a daily supply of her freshly-baked cakes to sweeten their stay.

But on the very first night, guests begin to see and hear strange things. Ginger manages to settle them down--until one of the guests is found dead. News quickly spreads, and gossipers rename the new bed & breakfast, "Ginger DEAD House." Now every phone call is another cancellation.

The Domino Girls see their life savings about to go down the drain. So Ginger proposes that the four of them work together to solve the mystery of the ghosts and the murder. "Domino Sleuth Club" is born.

But their task may prove more difficult and dangerous than anyone could have imagined.

Second in a series, but it can stand alone 23. Januar 2012
Von Jill Krawczyk - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I read 'Ginger Dead House' immediately upon finishing 'Sweet Ginger Poison'.

Like the first, this story was fun and interesting. I liked the continuation of characters and the plot that kept me guessing.

As a stand alone story, it is a great cozy read and I barely put it down. As the second in a series, it was disconcerting.

I had to stop reading to check to see if I had missed a book in-between. From the end of SGP and the start of GDH, it seems that a great deal of time has gone by in Coreyville.

The beginning of GDH opens with the surprise of the ladies having already started a B&B. There had been no lead up or background for this venture. I guess the ladies just had a whim and ran with it. Although Ginger can be impulsive, she didn't strike me as flighty in the first book. I don't know why they would give up their homes and previously profitable businesses to do something so risky, and the author didn't explain.

I adjusted my mental picture and read GDH house as a stand alone story, ignored my previously imagined backdrop, and make a conscious effort to accept changes that seemed unbelievable. Taken individually, this tale is just as interesting as the first, but I do hope the author builds bridges instead of leaping over gaps in future books.

Good Easy Read- Cozy Series? or not? 27. Januar 2012

I agree w/ Jill K. when it comes to wondering if I missed something in between the two books. Although, Ginger has not given up her shop... It is very briefly mentioned but she does still own the cake shop- Addie now has 10% ownership in it since the last fiasco. Jane and the others did though give up a lot to go into the B&B it seems. This story line, again good but rolled a bit quickly in bringing out character development and it was more of Ginger doing sleuthing than a lot of the great "cozy mystery camaraderie" that I truly love in cozies. I will still look for the next as this is an intriguing bunch of ladies... I am still waiting to see a recipe or two at least in a future book. Preferably, Sweet Ginger Cake... Mr. Robinson, you started this, now you must finish, LOL Let's see more than a "short" this time, give us some more time with the characters- you have started something good here- develop more! & find one niche for this group and we will follow it. Cake shop and B&B - a lot to work with here. I am willing to follow. 3 stars for the inconsistent story-line between the two books and the very quick introduction and jump to the end.

Okay, but weaker than the first book 10. Februar 2012
Von Kribu - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I read the first book in this cozy mystery series, Sweet Ginger Poison (Ginger Lightley Short Novel Mystery Series: Vol. 1), last year, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Ginger Dead House is the follow-up to the first book; it can be read as a stand-alone, but it would probably help to know some of the main characters from the first short novel, as there wasn't much in the way of characterisation in this instalment.

The central mystery was interesting enough (and while I'd worked out some parts of it, I hadn't guessed everything by the end), and Ginger Lightley isn't a bad little old lady sleuth as little old lady sleuths go, but this book didn't work quite as well for me as the first one. The pacing felt a bit off - too rushed and choppy, the characterisation of regulars relied too much on people having read and remembering the first book, and the supporting cast felt flat. I also found the style, especially the very short declarative sentences and short paragraphs, a little tiresome.

Still, all in all, I'd say it's a perfectly passable little cozy mystery. I didn't spot any obvious grammar issues, although an editor might have caught the change in one character's name (Libby turned into Lilly from one chapter to the next), and I was pleasantly delighted by the excellent formatting of the Kindle book. (Not something that can always be taken for granted, unfortunately, so I feel it deserves a positive mention!)
