Before her world tilts towards impossible, Caspia Chastain thinks the only strange thing about her is that she sometimes draws the future. Only her brother Logan knows what she can do. When she draws a man surrounded by brilliant light, dark wings, and frightening symbols, she can only hope the vision won't come true.

But when a stranger named Ethan appears, determined to protect Caspia and her brother from dangers he won't explain, she's not sure what to think. Strangers almost never come to Whitfield. They certainly don't follow her around, frightening her one moment and treating her like glass the next. And they certainly don't look exactly like the subject of her most violent drawing.

Next book, please! 22. Februar 2011

A well-written and original paranormal read. I tend to like darker paranormal stories and this was quite satisfying. The main character was well-developed and likeable. She wasn't the typical 'woe is me' heroine (ahem, Twilight).

I read a lot in this genre/price range and was impressed with the story/characters/writing. If you love romance novels where the author spends about every other page hammering into your head how attractive the hero is then you won't like this. I, however, appreciated it. I loved the brother/sister relationship too.

Now, I need to know when the next one comes out. Please don't make it super expensive. I hate getting hooked on the first in a series and the next one is ten times the price. It's evil.

Definitely a fun read! 27. Januar 2011

This book is a slow burn. But it's a slow burn worth the wait.

Vicki Keire clearly has a gift for language. She can turn a phrase like nobody's business, giving her descriptions a lilting, poetic quality that's telling of her background as a multi-degree student of literature. Of course, sometimes, I kind of skimmed them, cause they were kind of long. Does this make me a bad person?

Gifts of the Blood isn't a book that's brimming with tension and conflict. At least, not at first. The story has a meandering quality, lovingly and deliberately describing every aspect of Caspia's life.

Oh, I guess I should take a second and explain what this book's about right? Kay, so Caspia is a super-talented artist who has the nifty ability to draw the future. Her brother's dying of cancer. One day, she draws a picture of a really hot dude. Then, she runs into the guy and like literally loses her grip on reality for several pages. He's that hot, okay? Turns out, this guy is actually the guardian of her brother's soul, and he's just waiting around for her brother to die so he can spirit the soul away. Which would be fine and all, except for the fact that he's sort of fallen hook, line, and sinker for Caspia. And when beings like him fall in love, they fall hard.

Quite a hook, right? Completely awesome premise. So, anyway, for a lot of the book, things are kind of moving slowly. But then, suddenly, in the last quarter of the book, Keire ramps up to tension to a fever pitch. I found myself sitting on my couch, huddled over my ereader, frantically pushing the button to flip pages. (Actually, my thumb is kind of sore.)

Coupled with that, there are some touches of pure genius. The town of Whitfield is a haunting setting, quite detailed, and lots of fun. The kind of place you know you want to go back to, like Hogwarts. Okay, yeah, that's a good comparison. Whitfield equals Stars Hollow (from Gilmore Girls) meets Hogwarts. Sound cool? It is. Then there's the whole mythology that Keire's built up, which creates some unforgettable characters, like Asheroth, a being like Caspia's main squeeze, who fell hard for a mortal who didn't want him, leaving him a maddened husk, quite insane, but pitiful at the same time. And frightening? Ooh, boy. He's a creepy one.

I can't say too much more without giving important bits away, but I will say this. The ending? The ending effing rocks.

A Good fun Paranormal Kindle Read 2. Januar 2011

I was pretty happy with this purchase overall. I read a lot in this genre, and I was pleased to find a book that had a lot of the conventions I love, but also managed to put in enough of a fresh perspective to keep things interesting. The main character, Caspia, is an art student, so she's a little older than your average YA heroine. She's used to being on her own, and this makes her really independent, which I liked about her. She's funny and fights for the people she loves. But sometimes she has a hard time seeing things going on around her. The romance is good but not too heavy handed. Fans of tortured, drawn-out triangles will find this a decided two person connection. When Caspia figures out who and what she wants she goes for it although it isn't without complications.
The male lead character, Ethan, appears first in Caspia's drawing and then again in real life, so we know that "something's up" with him. Again, another genre convention, but one the author handles well. It's not screamingly obvious who or what Ethan is, other than something not human. You know how in some paranormal fiction you want to reach in and grab the main character and scream, "He's a squidbeast, you idiot! I could tell from like, page 1!" (He's not a squidbeast. I promise.) There was no sense of that here, and when I felt like I knew what Ethan was, there was a twist. I don't want to spoil, but I really liked the way the author blended art and the supernatural instead of traditional mythology or religion.
Speaking of art, since Caspia is an artist and we see things through her point of view, there is a lot of vivid description. Detailed description, the town, character's appearance, that kind of thing. Also, there were one or two scenes that might be too adult for younger readers. Nothing explicit- the author leaves room for interpretation- but some people are very sensitive to that kind of thing. I'm not, and it bothers me when people get all upset abut a make out scene or two, so here's your head's up.
I really liked the villian. A lot. I hope he comes back in the sequel. In fact, I hope he takes over the world. He's wicked and terrifying with just the right hint of redemption. Which brings me to the ending: Things really heat up right before the ending. I really, really want to know what happens next.
