The Geronimo Breach pits the world's most unlikely protagonist against the deadliest adversaries on the planet. From the corridors of Langley to the sweltering jungles of Panama, from the hills of Pakistan to the cocaine trails of Columbia, a clandestine scheme to preserve a terrible secret goes horribly awry, plunging a reluctant hero down a deadly rabbit hole of deceit and betrayal, while raising disturbing questions about the media, the war on terror & its linkage with the war on drugs, & the nature of reality in an age of sound-bites and photo ops.

Albert Ross is a malingering misanthrope - a boozing, chain smoking philanderer; shifty, lazy, cowardly, going to fat, & more prone to doing the wrong thing than any man alive. His purgatorial existence working for the State Department in Panama gets shattered when a routine errand becomes a race against the clock, battling adversaries for whom no price is too high to protect a secret that could topple the world order. As the body count climbs in a struggle without rules, Al must face his own demons, as well as the myriad very real ones intent upon destroying him. The unexpectedly shattering conclusion of this richly drawn thriller is both topical & chillingly plausible, making for a roller-coaster action/adventure without parallel.

Q & A for The Geronimo Breach w/ USA Today bestselling author Russell Blake

Question: The Geronimo Breach is a radical departure from your usual thrillers. In this, we follow the tribulations of arguably the most horrible protagonist on the planet. Why write this character, this story, this way?

RB: It started off as a knee-jerk reaction to several books I'd read, where the heroes were bland & predictable. So over a few beers, I thought, what about writing a hero who's so despicable there's no way anyone could like him, but by the end of the book, in spite of him or ourselves, we do? Anyone can write a hero with appeal. How about one who has no appeal, and will actually do the worst possible thing for his situation, every time? A slob who's so low, he's compulsively losing even when he could win? Out of that came Al, who is probably the most remarkable character I've ever written. Can he prevail? Can he be redeemed? Is he even worth redeeming? Al's my favorite character out of all my books, by far. No question.

Q: The Geronimo Breach's conspiracy is a shocker, & calls into question some sacred beliefs. Have you gotten any negative feedback about it?

RB: Other than the circling black helicopters, you mean? Seriously, I just took something that seemed absurd to me on its face, & proposed an alternative possibility. If it rings true, that says a lot for my powers of invention, or more accurately, about the official story. Will we ever know the truth? Who even knows what the truth is anymore?

Q: The Geronimo Breach has drawn acclaim from other authors as being landmark & defining. What's your take on it?

RB: I think Geronimo is one of the books I'd recommend to readers who've never read one of my books. If they want to know how I differ from the monosyllabic guys cranking out formulaic screeds featuring hackneyed characters in formulaic situations, my response would be, read Geronimo. I'm particularly proud of the characters & the plot twists and turns, & would argue there's no other book quite like it. How often can you say that?

Q:Why do readers respond the way they do to Al?

RB: I think it's refreshing to read a protagonist who's so badly flawed. We see in him bits of ourselves, or people we know, & that resonates as being true. Al is remarkable, in that even after I finished with him, he lingers in my psyche like fungus. Hard to shake him.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another Home Run for Blake 20. Mai 2012
Von The Kindle Book Review - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
In "The Geronimo Breach," a thriller involving the Middle East, Latin America, drugs, diplomacy, international deception and so forth, popular Indie author Russell Blake has gone out on a limb while still spinning an irresistible tale. The plot doesn't end up where the reader thinks it will, the author is unsparing in his piling on of corruption and evil doing, and perhaps most of all, he has created a protagonist, Al Ross, that was intentionally created to be next to impossible to like. Perhaps it says more about what readers have come to expect--or take for granted, really--that Al is actually like any number of people one encounters in life. His dubiousness as a hero stems from extremely common character traits in the real world. Readers unwilling to accept Al as protagonist may also be afraid to look in the mirror. I think that Blake was doing more than challenging the reader's stereotypes about heroes in creating Al. I think he also was trying to show how, in today's world, virtually anybody could find themselves in the midst of corruption on a major scale. For me, this made Al actually more effective as a hero, because if he could have to deal with all this so could anyone.

Many readers are already familiar with Blake's gift for the written word: his economy of style, his impeccable timing, his gift for characterization, and--underrated, I think--his sense of humor. But I'll mention them again anyway. He is, and I choose my words carefully, a sadistically good writer. And apparently many are willing to surrender themselves to the many deliciously thorny places he takes them.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Would Give It 6 Stars If I Could 4. September 2011

You must read this book.

I can't believe what Blake has done with this novel. Most writers present protagonists that are good, but flawed. Not Blake. He draws a picture of the most unlikeable character since...well, I can't think of any this abominable. Yet, at the end of the day - you gotta love Al. The transition is seamless. An incredible job of characterization.

Beyond that amazing feat, Blake manages to weave a story that is packed full of political intrigue, details of life on foreign soil, nitty-gritty adventure and complete believability. I found myself actually nodding as I read parts of this, knowing full well that Blake presents a true and accurate picture of international politics and the US participation in it.

Okay, it's be honest. Indie authors have a bad rep. I've found several really good authors but we're up against the publishing houses and it's often tough to make the grade without a publicity machine. Russell Blake is going to be very big someday and that's good for all Indie authors.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Comedy of errors that's deadly serious. 16. Februar 2013
Von Jerry Nowlin - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The Geronimo Breach is a spy thriller with some serious political commentary. Of course the spy in this novel would make Inspector Clouseau look like James Bond. It would be a comedy of errors, except it's deadly serious. This book is free for Amazon prime members and $4.57 for others.

Albert Ross is a diplomat stationed in Panama. Al is a loser, a boozer, and shady to boot. He uses his diplomatic status to do a few side jobs to pay for his bookies and his booze. Al takes what looks like a simple job, escorting a man across the border to Columbia. The job is not as simple as Al thought. When bodies start to pile up, Al finally realizes he's taken a job he won't be coming back from, one way or the other. Plenty of action for anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very highly recommended.

I guess the author is a small time guy in the world of literary noteriaty but is big time in talent. This is a great book. Had me glued to my chair. Gonna check out some his other stuff.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Al Is My New Hero 25. August 2011
Von Jen - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
The main character in the book is as reprehensible a human example as any I've encountered, and yet by the end of the book I was hooked. That's as rare as anything I can recall, where an author creates an unsympathetic hero and you love him anyway. Al is a walking moral hazard but you wind up rooting him on.

I won't give away the hook in the plot, except to say that it's so plausible a conspiracy I can 99% see it as truth disguised as fiction. Bonechilling, essential reading. Bravo, Russell.
