From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up. This volume differs from other books available on German Americans in its focus on personal narratives. Although the Hooblers include historical data, the bulk of each chapter consists of original accounts taken from interviews, autobiographies, letters, and journals, all of which support and elaborate on the text. These accounts are inclusive in terms of gender, age, and geographical location, as well as for years and events discussed. Unfortunately, the often small black-and-white photos, combined with the narrow columns of print, give the book a dull, scholarly appearance. The time line is abbreviated and disappointing, particularly in comparison with that in Bernard and Rosemarie Cook's German Americans (Rourke, 1991). Otherwise, the Album is a useful addition to ethnic studies, especially if used with Irene Franck's The German-American Heritage (Facts on File, 1988), the best and most thorough of the in-print books. Other useful titles include Anne Galicich's The German Americans (Chelsea, 1995) and Thomas Schouweiler's Germans in America (Lerner, 1994).?Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
