Get The Mixing Bowl Out! 9. Dezember 2013
Von Grandma - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
It has been more than four decades since I stepped off the plane in Frankfurt, Germany, where I would live for several years as a military wife. We lived in a picturesque area not too far from Frankfurt, sharing a rather large house with an older German couple, their children and grandchild. Every afternoon Lydia held a coffee hour for everyone who happened to be home at the time. As it happens, she also taught me to bake a number of German specialties. What fun we had baking Christmas cookies by the hundreds of dozens! We must have baked 20 dishpans full. (The Burgermeister's wife baked a stollen for every family in town!) I still bake those cookies every Christmas, so I couldn't help but Look Inside the cover of German and American Cookies. I didn't even need to read the recipes to know I had the "real" thing. All I had to do was see the picture of author Angelika Price sitting at the beautifully covered table with the coffee service laid out and a cake ready for cutting. What memories that brought back!

I did read the recipes though - a couple of times. And compared a few of them to my old faithfuls. And checked my stash of baking supplies! Angelika has done a fantastic job with German and American Cookies. Including not only her own recipes but also several contributed by her friends, you'll find a picture for almost every scrumptious recipe in a well laid out, easy to use format. While some of the 56 included recipes are tried and true recipes that hail from the US, most are distinctly German/Austrian. Note that a few of the 56 recipes are for candy, particularly marzipan, with a couple of cakes thrown in for good measure, including the recipe for the lovely Hazelnut Torte shown in Angelika's welcome picture.

Grandma's $0.02 - It wouldn't be Christmas at Grandma's without Vanilla Kipferln, Pfefferneuse, Lebkuchen, Spitzbuben and Spritz. OMG - There are only 15 days left! I'm off to the kitchen to bake. Guten essen!

Highly recommended

UPDATE - In response to a comment left below, I have been through every line of every recipe in the book and assembled a complete list of "out of the ordinary" ingredients that are called for in some of the recipes. You'll find them all in a comment below, together with links for most of them. I found no ingredients that needed any kind of "translation" other than that provided in the book.

Delightful! 10. November 2013
Von J. Stumpfel - Veröffentlicht auf

This little cookbook was such a delight. Lots of traditional and some new recipes. I particularly enjoyed the anecdotes that introduced the recipes. What was appreciated was an explanation of some of the uncommon ingredients and how to substitute if you couldn't get them. I already have many of these recipes (or similar) and anticipate making many of these treats for the holidays. It's a great collection.

Wow, what a great cookie book. I make truffles and do a bit of baking at the holidays, and I'm always on the lookout for new and different cookie recipes. This book has bunches that I've never seen before. I tried the cinnamon stars and they were great. Can't wait to try more.

Germans Make the Best Cookies 4. November 2013
Von M. Schiegg - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
When it comes to cookbooks, I do judge a book by its cover, and that's what drew me in. Many of the cookie recipes look a lot like the ones my German grandmother used to make when I was a child, such as the Vanilla Crescents and Edith's Sugar Cookies. I'll be baking more than just Toll House cookies this Christmas, that's for sure! I am so glad I found this book.
