The momentous influx of Mexican undocumented workers into the United States over the last decades has spurred new ways of thinking about immigration. Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo's incisive book enlarges our understanding of these recently arrived Americans and uncovers the myriad ways that women and men recreate families and community institutions in a new land. Hondagneu-Sotelo argues that people do not migrate as a result of concerted household strategies, but as a consequence of negotiations often fraught with conflict in families and social networks. Women gain greater personal autonomy and independence as they participate in public life and gain access to both social and economic influence previously beyond their reach. I thought the book was great. The fact alone that I read it was benefitial in the way that I learned about people's experiences as immigrants. Also, Prof. Hondagneu Sotelo teaches at the University of Southern California, and I had the great opportunity of taking her class (Immigrant America)and reading her book and have her explain it directly.

Issues of gender and immigration are often overlooked in sociological analysis. Hondagneu-Sotelo successfully delves into the convoluted field of sociology of migration and successfully shows ways in which gender transitions within Mexican Families do not cleanly fall into stereotypes one presumes about Mexicans. Overall, a great book to read as an example of strong ethnographic work that is supported with strong theoretical foundations and analysis.
