Kurzbeschreibung

The town of Parkers Bluff is a small island community populated by the descendants of two families who were shipwrecked on the island centuries ago. The Parkers were pirates and the Rumpholts were their victims, but they were forced to live together in order to survive. The town becomes known for its annual Mullet Festival, which celebrates both the fish and the haircut. The only other thing that attracts people to the island are the rumors of lost pirate treasure.
When another hurricane hits the island Jason Rumpholt and Sam Parker are forced to work together to keep the island safe from natural and man made disasters. Jason unexpectedly becomes both the mayor and chief of police for the island, and Sam arrives at Parker’s Bluff as the FEMA contact in charge of disaster assistance. The men soon realize they are dealing with a man-eating alligator and multiple criminal acts when people begin to disappear and their communication with the outside world is cut off.
Jason is also dealing with his ex-boyfriend who wants to reconcile, his growing attraction to Sam whose sexuality seems to be a mystery, and his involvement with a college jock who’s visiting the island for fall break.
As Jason tries to adjust to his new leadership role on the island and tries to keep the body count from rising he stumbles through events as best as he can. He’s just not sure he can deal with the distractions of deep-fried squirrels, a wasted pop star, spoiled college kids, evil gators, and the flood waters of the storm.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Witzige Persiflage 25. Februar 2014
Von Gelegenheitsleser TOP 500 REZENSENT
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Empfehlenswert!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fasten Your Seatbelts, You're In For A Fabulous Ride. 5. Februar 2014
Von Alan Arthur Katz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I am a compulsive reader of gay-themed fiction - 600 books in the last year. Yet I must confess that, despite wallowing in the mire of angst, coming-out-stories, disabilities-of-the-week and failures-to-communicate, I am always on the lookout for top-flight examples of unique, inventive, different and creative gay fiction. Well, fasten your seat-belts, this is it, and what's more, it's hilariously, uproariously funny. Honestly, I can't remember when I last enjoyed gay fiction (or ANY fiction) this much!

It's the story of an island settled by two families, the Parkers (formerly pirates) and the Rumpholts (formerly their victims). The Parkers are all tall, gorgeous, not-entirely-honest, and they faint at the sight of blood or violence. The Rumpholts, on the other hand, are short, hairy and smart (it was they who earned the treasure that the Parkers hijacked) and not quite so squeamish. Run aground, the pirates and victims landed on, and settled, a shifting island in a delta which was later named "Parker's Bluff".

This book is the story of one man from each family: Jason Rumpholt, the former assistant to the Mayor-and-Chief of Police, and Sam, a Parker who helicopters in, in the wake of a major hurricane, as the FEMA agent in charge of recovery.

It also involves a host of other characters, including a hot frat boy visiting the island, and his "member" (which is the size of a beer can, and thus, his nickname "Foster"), another psychotic frat boy, a pair of Italian brothers who seem to have had every woman in town, cook for local events and run the fire engine, a grade-B former-child-star drugging her time away on the island, Jason's ex (who, exploiting his larcenous Parker genes, works on Wall St.), town historian Betty (another Parker), an out-of-control 80-year old, a 25-foot-long man-eating alligator and an annual "mullet" festival, celebrating both the fish and the haircut.

Jason's boss, Bucky (another Parker), has disappeared in the hurricane, leaving behind a note naming Jason as the new Police Chief and Mayor. As they say, mayhem ensues. His term starts off with a speech to the community which he gives (unknowingly) with his fly wide open and his private parts punctuating his points. That gives you some idea of where the book goes from there.

There is theft, arson, murder, attempted murder, and a shootout that defies description and wraps up all the mysteries in an orgy of confessions. Just imagine at least four different groups sporting a variety of weapons (including a rocket launcher), vying to either kill or protect Jason in order to get their hands on a pot of gold (metaphorically speaking, of course).

I must admit, I'm not the kind of reader who reacts visibly while reading, except for an occasional tear or a look of dismay at a poorly-written paragraph. But this book had me, literally, rolling on the floor. And it never let up, moving inexorably to its outrageous, uproarious climax.

This is an extraordinarily well-written book, with engaging, funny and charming characters, artful evocations of scene and place, and totally unexpected turns and developments. What delivers the greatest joy, however, is how creative, inventive and unique it is. It even manages to be sexy without a single sex scene. Now that's an accomplishment - and a welcome one!

It is not without it's fault (singular). I continue to be astonished at how quasi-literate so many authors of gay fiction are, even those published by major houses. Too many of the books I've read in this genre display junior-high-school-level errors in spelling or grammar, and "A Gator Tale" is no exception. While it's significantly better than most Kindle books I've read recently, the author does, regularly, use apostrophes incorrectly, with "Parkers Bluff" (missing) and "the Parker's were all like that" (no apostrophes on plurals, please!) being good examples. I would normally ding a book at least one star for its lack of editing, but this book was just so superb, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I hope this notable new author is widely read and gets the acclaim and encouragement he richly deserves. And, more important, I hope there's a sequel in the works, because I can't wait to read it!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Funny, suspenseful and endearing! 19. November 2014
Von The Troll Under the Bridge - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This was a fantastic read! The characterizations were realistic and each character was easily identifiable by their own individuality. That is something that's not that easy for a writer to accomplish. The story was crazy wild like Carl Hiaasen or Tim Dorsey. The plot line was complicated but, in the end, the stories all coalesced to make sense. I read this book in one sitting. It was hilarious, suspenseful and filled with people I liked and cared about. The pacing was varied and well executed.

I do not know if this author is well known in genre fiction. If he is not, he should be. He is a great writer. If you are wondering if you should give this book a try, believe me, you'll really be doing yourself a favor by reading it. I cannot tell you what a breath of fresh air it was as a "gay" mystery. The characters are not stereotypes, the action is not silly and unimaginative and the writer is able to use language in a very natural way. This book is a winner all the way around!!

The storyline was drab and the characters were to simplistic making them seem a little dense. I was able to get a to the part were they were conducting their community meeting and stopped reading. I deleted it from my Kindle and then downloaded it again a few days later and again found it just wasn't happening for me.
