Kurzbeschreibung

In the Labyrinth, we had a saying: keep silent, keep still, keep safe.

In a city of walls and secrets, where only one man is supposed to possess magic, seventeen-year-old Kai struggles to keep hidden her own secret—she can manipulate the threads of time. When Kai was eight, she was found by Reev on the riverbank, and her “brother” has taken care of her ever since. Kai doesn’t know where her ability comes from—or where she came from. All that matters is that she and Reev stay together, and maybe one day move out of the freight container they call home, away from the metal walls of the Labyrinth. Kai’s only friend is Avan, the shopkeeper’s son with the scandalous reputation that both frightens and intrigues her.

Then Reev disappears. When keeping silent and safe means losing him forever, Kai vows to do whatever it takes to find him. She will leave the only home she’s ever known and risk getting caught up in a revolution centuries in the making. But to save Reev, Kai must unravel the threads of her past and face shocking truths about her brother, her friendship with Avan, and her unique power.

Lori M. Lee makes her debut with this captivating YA fantasy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great story with great potential 12. Februar 2015
Von Andre H.
Format:Kindle Edition
Awesome! This story was, though set in a dystopian world, for all intends and purposes, very real. The characters are very well rounded and you really get to know them as to me is a characteristic of a good book. I like how complicated this story gets, especially towards the end. because that again, makes it more real. Nothing is ever easy in life either.

The protagonist and her particular "superpower" has so much potential, (though could also backfire) and I'm really looking forward to where the author decides to take book two. I'll definitely be reading it.

What I think some people may consider a downside to this story is the speed with which you go from a small scale story to epic, infinite beings. Though considering her ability infinite beings are handy to have around to create plots. Maybe. I might have preferred a more gradual ascension and recognition of the protagonist, but this'll do.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't put it down 10. August 2014
Von S. Wilburn - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I started reading this book yesterday and I barely put it down before I finished at 2am this morning. (I did have to pause to watch Outlander.) I loved this book! Fascinating world-building (I wish I had my own "Gray"), and I loved the characters, especially Kai. (And the love interests were yummy.) When I brushed the last tear from my eye and finally set down my kindle in the middle of the night, my first thought was "Drek! Now I have to wait for the sequel."

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book starts with the best opening line I have read in years - 'Death ... 12. August 2014
Von Rose - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book starts with the best opening line I have read in years - 'Death lived in a glass tower at the center of the White Court.'

The rest of it doesn't disappoint. It's been years since I properly delved into the world of YA, and I'm glad that this book was my reintroduction.

The main character is possessed of genuine personality, humor, and conviction. She forgives, but not too easily, and she trusts, but not too blindly. I adore her for it. As for the rest, the book's world-building is layered, its mythology convincing, its depiction of poverty well-informed, and its frank inclusion of sexuality refreshing (while never nearing inappropriate).

Very happy this was recommended to me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best YA Fantasy I read in 2014 2. Januar 2015
Von Darci Cole - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I loved this book.

If I'm being completely honest, it was a little slow to start, but I knew why. The learning curve for information was s lot to process, so I kept putting it down in order to wrap my mind around things. Not s bad thing, it just is.

These characters were so genuine I feel like they're my best friends. I laughed, I lived, and I found myself saying the dialogue out loud and making the expressions of the characters. (That's how I know I'm invested, when I catch myself doing that.)

My heart broke, and wasn't entirely healed, but I'm looking forward to the sequel in 2015!!!

4.0 von 5 Sternen I love things that have to do with Time 6. August 2014
Von Jen @ Library of a Book Witch - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
First off I have an obsession with time. I even love the word Kronos, so when I see a book about someone with awesome time bending abilities. I’m totally sold. Gates of Thread and Stone was right up my alley and I love the way Lori M. Lee represented time as in threads and a river. I thought it was a really cool visual that was created in my head.

As far as world building is concerned, this is actually only small little piece of the planet but it felt so vast, when Lori was explaining the White Court, the Districts, The Void and the Outlands. I could vividly see it all come together in my head. Especially the Labyrinth for some reason. I thought the idea of it was pretty interesting.. There is also a map provided which I like because it gives me the outline then the author fills in the color.

I like books that have a journey aspect to them. Kai and Avan set off on their mission to find Reev and I liked their travels of first finding their way into the outlands, then setting off through it. Little hidden mysteries that are along the way that stuck in my brain and when other things were revealed at the end those pieces fell into place. The author doesn’t blatantly point it out to you, you just think back and go ahhhh I see now why that happened. Of course. Which I like. You can lead me to the water but I don’t always need to be told to drink.

Kai is interesting character and I think there is something important about the way she develops. It really ties in to the end of the book. Kai is flawed and I think the way she is most is her emotions and attachments. When she cares about someone she is fierce in her loyalty and dedication. Even to the point of blindness. She is the kind of person that would rather have a few very close friends then be surrounded by a million acquaintances. As far as her relationship with Avan, I don’t think she didn’t necessarily see it, she was really focused on other things. It was almost like she didn’t want to allow herself to have it.

I really loved Avan. He was just amazing all around and super easy to crush on. I also liked his views on love and sexuality. He is just so down to Earth and awesome.

I loved the Infinite and the idea behind them. I liked how it seemed to be mixing our world with one with tangible magic. However as great as the world building was, I didn’t think this aspect of the book was flushed out enough. Sometimes I was a little confused by how it all came together. The biggies maybe like Death or even Kronos but I kind of wanted to know how many there are and their task. Maybe that was explained and I just didn’t get it.

I also wasn’t sure how I felt about the Tournament. I was actually expecting there to be more to it being that there was a good part dedicated to training for it.

Overall though I really enjoyed the book. It has an awesome cover of course. I kept picturing the threads of time that way. A couple things bothered me slightly but I don’t think it ruined the book for me. I will continue on to the second one being that I’m really curious what it’s about. I’m hoping that it go into a little more detail of the mythology.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rae Carson 29. Dezember 2014
Von Arianne - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Gates of Thread and Stone was by far one of the best books I read in 2014. Thrilling, well-written and packed with detail, it's perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rae Carson. A dystopian-steampunk adventure with its feet firmly planted in fantasy and the occasional nod to real-world mythology, it's a fantastic addition to any YA shelf.

Spirited heroine Kai is loyal, determined and downright brilliant. Her romance with male lead Avan is rooted deeply in trust and friendship, which I loved, and the bond she shares with her brother Reev is at the very heart of the novel. Featuring a diverse cast and some refreshingly complex villains, there's a sense that this book is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Kai's war-ravaged world.

The writing is exquisite and the plot twists and turns to the very last page. Kai's ability to control time doesn't play as big a role as you'd expect and sometimes it feels as if the book is running on two very separate tracks, but all is eventually revealed in true showdown style. There are, of course, still some unanswered questions, but it's a hugely satisfying read and I can't wait to return for the sequel.
