Follow the adventures of Gaspar, a freelance thief who stubbornly refuses to swear fealty to the Thieves' Guild.

Cursed with a special affinity for calamity and mishap, and a talent for snatching defeat from the brink of victory, our hero blunders from one misfortune to the next, yet somehow always manages to survive to tell the tale.

Accompanied by his long-suffering companions - Hubris, a spellbroker who refuses to pay his dues to Wizards' Hall; Marna, a feisty thiefess with a quick tongue and a quicker temper; and Drune, a mischievous wight with an unusual magical ability - our unlikely hero encounters looming retribution and imminent catastrophe at every step.

Whether raiding a sinister funeral ship, foiling a scheming seductress, solving a puzzling murder, or confronting a gang of villainous ship-wreckers, Gaspar always somehow manages to narrowly side step disaster. But there's seemingly no end to the troubles he can find, and he soon finds himself an unwitting player in the siege of an ancient border fortress by a goblin army.

Told with an appealing mixture of seriousness and humour, this is an exciting, fast-paced romp based in a fantasy world where anything can, and usually does, happen!

(Please note that only the paperback edition of Gaspar The Thief includes the prequel novella, Gaspar And The Fantastical Hats. These are sold separately as e-books.)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fun adventure fantasy 11. November 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed reading Gaspar the Thief, I found it a nice easy read full of fun adventure fantasy, humour and an intriguing story. The first chapter sets the scene introducing the reader to Gaspar, his companions and the world of Rubas Derad. The second chapter I had already read as a free download through Amazon (which I have done a separate review for). So for me the story really kicked off from the third chapter. The book follows Gaspar through his many adventures from being a detective, hostage, traveller, thief and trickster. The stories are action packed and full of twists, definitely a page turner. I particularly enjoyed a section of the book which follows the garrison commander of a fortress under imminent attack from an army of goblins. The tense atmosphere is balanced out with the parallel story of Gaspar and his companions writing up a contract for the services of a mischievous wood-wight which is full of funny moments. I really liked how all the different stories combined and found myself really rooting for Gaspar. I would definitely recommend this book to all fantasy/adventure fans.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An Enjoyable Light Fantasy 20. Juni 2013
Von Nash Android - Veröffentlicht auf

This is not so much a single novel as it is a series of related adventures centered on the thief, Gaspar; the lovely Marna, a fellow thief and Gaspar's volatile love interest; and their `spellbroker' associate, Hubris. Their escapades (most often not as successful as they hope) and misadventures provide the basis for the ten chapters of the book.

The characters are engaging, but not exactly likeable. Their highest goal seems to be to abscond with as much loot as safely as possible, with little compassion over the fate of the loot's current owner. Gaspar and his companions aren't murderous rouges, but they are clearly rogues.

Written from a limited omniscient point of view, the prose, grammar, and vocabulary in this book are a notch above the norm that I've personally found in light fantasy. The characters are uncomplicated but not stupid. The world building is quite good and creates a believable fantasy setting full of dirty cities, filthy gutters, crumbling castles, guilds, inns, taverns, and the occasional bawdy house.

This book is not so much comedy as it is light fantasy. The setting and characters reminded by of the Thraxas books by Martin Scott (AKA Martin Millar) -- kind of a late Medieval world with personality-flawed characters, magic, and mythical creatures.

I can't say this book is innovative in any way, but it is an enjoyable read. I recommend it for readers of light fantasy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Classic fantasy not to be missed 6. November 2012

Gaspar the Thief has everything you want in a good fantasy - an intricate plot, wizards and magic, and a series of adventures taking place against the backdrop of a beautifully-drawn ancient world. David A Lindsay writes in an eloquent style making it a pleasure to read and lending the story an epic Tolkien-esque quality. I couldn't put my Kindle down until I had finished Gaspar the Thief. Highly recommended to all fantasy fans.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This should be an HBO series 30. April 2013

I absolutely loved this book. I am totally into sci-fi and adventure and this book has both with a touch of magic and medieval mixed in for good measure. The only bad thing about the book in my opinion is that it ends. The mini stories could definitely continue and they all left me wanting more. In fact, HBO should really think about making this a new series after Game of Thrones ends.
I am hoping for another book with the same fantastic cast of characters to come out in the future. But in the meantime, if you really liked this book try Gaspar and the Fantastical Hats. It was really good too.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Gaspar is wonderful 22. März 2014

I love Gaspar, & everyone else in David Lindsay's books. He can bring a character to life in just a few sentences, the stories are always fast-paced & intriguing, & I also can't help but think that these tiny thread-ends that have been left lying will all come together at some point in the future. Highly recommended.
