Kurzbeschreibung

The sight of a wild landscape covered with heathers in full bloom is breathtaking, so it is little surprise that people have found ways of introducing these rewarding plants into their gardens. Here they excel, offering color in the drabbest months and a huge diversity of height, habit, and other valuable characteristics in return for modest cultural demands.

This comprehensive and highly informative account encompasses the heaths and heathers of the closely related genera Calluna, Daboecia, and Erica, whose shared characteristics and similar cultural requirements make them broadly compatible in a variety of garden situations. These plants have enhanced people's lives for millennia and a full discussion of their naming, uses and other interactions with humans is explored in detail. A fascinating account of the unique ecological niche they occupy – including their remarkable adaptation to make use of the nitrogen and phosphorus unavailable to most other plants – provides a fitting context for discussion of their specific cultural needs. With more than 700 cultivated varieties of Calluna alone, selecting the right heather for the right place can be daunting. The detailed selection of cultivated hardy heathers conveniently provides gardeners with the best garden performers while further lists allow them to search for heathers for specific qualities, such as heat tolerance, ground cover, or early summer blooming. Design options for displaying heathers at their best in the garden are provided along with advice on spacing, pruning, propagation, pests, and diseases.

In this fascinating and beautifully illustrated work, classic wild-collected cultivars are described alongside the latest introductions to produce an invaluable reference that will inspire heather enthusiasts and gardeners for generations to come.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful Reference Work 14. Juni 2009
Von A. Willard - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
After seeing this book offered at New England's largest heather nursery, I requested it from my library's network (just one copy of this new title was available in eastern Mass. at the time). My initial "thumb turning" suggested that, with the authors residing in the UK and California, this might not be for me either (USDA Zone 5B - heather's cultural frontier because we don't have reliable, winter-long snow cover) but I decided to start it. This book is very well done and exhaustively researched by two experts in the field. I thought Chapter 2's (Care & Cultivation / Soil) discussion of Mycorrhizae alone was worth the book's asking price. Much of this book's information is useful in areas well beyond heathers and heath. I'm not sure what Evonne's expectations were but this gardener's expectations were more than met in full and I subsequently purchased it from Amazon. This is one very fine gardening reference!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great information, no color photos in E-book 15. Dezember 2011
Von Nen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I knew before buying the book that I might be pushing zones to try to add heathers to my garden (zone 4), but I had seen a zone 5 heather in a gardening magazine, so figured it was worth finding out more. The photos on the website sample are luscious--sadly, the e-book version only had black-and-white photos. However, the wealth of information about growing heathers and the history and background of heathers (and heath) is worthwhile, even without the photos--but for only $3 more (or perhaps even less than the price of the e-book), buy the hard copy so you can get the color photos. Bonus--I was excited to find out that the sandy and poor soil in my garden, while ill-suited to growing grass, might be the ideal environment to grow heather. After the disappointment of discovering that the e-book did not have color photos, I took advantage of Amazon's 7-day return policy for e-books, but I will definitely be buying this in hard-cover. You may enjoy this book if you are interested in plants that will be low-maintenance, or are trying to shift to gardening with shrubs, or are a fan of the sweeping/romantic Piet Oudolf-style designs...

Item received on time and as described. I was not aware until I received the book that its major focus (and printing) is England. How many varieties are here in states I am not sure.
