"OK" only (review of both Volume One & Volume Two) 14. Februar 2014
Von daniel lee - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Unfortunately Martin's great work does not receive the work of illustration it requires. This work of illustration does not in fact match Martin's work in quality and is less well-adapted to Martin's many masterful character personalities and their development. It does not evoke any positive effect on one like me who has a long history of reading comics and graphic novels by some of the best and many of the run of the mill illustrators and colorists.

I am sorry if my comparison seems vague at first but when my wife read the first few pages of volume one I waited for her to eventually tell me her impression. It took more than a day before she gave me her unsolicited appraisal. She was quite disappointed. She found it uninteresting compared to the novel and to the HBO film series, both of which we deeply admire.

I then set before her for comparison Alan Moore's Watchmen (also a great novel in its own right), with illustrations and lettering by Dave Gibbons, and coloring by John Higgins to see what she thought. Immediately her comment was "that's what I was expecting!"
Additional examples of great illustration in a graphic novel form can be found in Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, with Klause Janson and Lynn Varley. Also the work of Moebius for The Incal, or Otomo's Akira make the comparison plain to see.

Why this illustrator would not wish to emulate the best in his own way is the failure of this work. We do not therefore have a graphic novel form of the Game of Thrones yet.

Even less well reviewed graphic novels in the DC or Marvel universe seem many times somehow to work well with the reader compared to Tommy Patterson's work in these first two volumes. Patterson's work fails to make the story, in "comic book" form, visually compelling. His illustrations are not able to show the distinctiveness of Martin's characters, which is the initial experience from page one all the way through. This could have been achieved in many ways as can be seen in the examples cited above. There is not one way to do this and the originality of the illustrator is free to choose.

Instead of giving the characters visual originality as they deserve they instead appear to blend into each other and never come to achieve a recognizabiltiy that is essential for this genre. Page after page I continued to struggle to determine who I am looking at and do this while trying to read the story. This is a problem of the page by page illustration work as a whole, and involves light and shadow, inking, color choice and pane divisions and spacing, characters and settings, knowing that Martin's universe is crowded with detail requiring thousands of pages to bring to fulfillment in traditional novel form.

I think this work shows, simply, how a graphic novel can be "OK only", that is, when the story is in fact an already well-known great story. I returned my hardcover purchases and Amazon was amazing about that. Kudos to them.
Respectfully submitted,
D Nagy

Worth the Money 24. Juli 2013

I have read all the books, my wife & I have seen all the seasons of the TV show. We both love the entire series. My wife is a huge fan of grahic novels so I thought I will buy the first two volumes for her to see how she likes it. She not only likes it, she loves it. The characters are very well done and the artistry is pretty cool. What better way to read a phenomenal story than as a graphic novel. Definitely waiting for Volume 3.

Interesting variation 3. Juli 2013
Von Michael - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I am extremely addicted to the whole spectrum of Game of Thrones versions. While GOT fundamentalists may moan about how the HBO series and graphic novels differ from the book, I rejoice in the variations. Especially since it appears the series and graphic novel creators have made the changes specifically to leverage the strong points of their media, and have the cooperation of George RR Martin in making them.

And with the long indeterminate gaps between the books, and year long gaps between HBO series, it is nice to have the graphic novel episodes to help dull the withdrawal.

Great gift book! 30. Juni 2013

This book (and the first one) is a great gift for fantasy fans! My elderly husband and his adolescent grandson both loved it. My husband has embraced graphic novels because of their ties to the comic books of his youth, if you have not considered a graphic novel for an older man, try it. And, this is a great series, these books are "keepers".
