Excellent and well written, this is the first English-language survey in depth of the bittersweet life and independent oeuvre of the pioneering Blue Rider artist Munter (1877-1962). She was first a student of and then a longtime artist/companion to Kandinsky, and her drawings, prints, and paintings deserve this wider recognition. (The monograph serves also as a catalog to 82 works traveling to four venues in the United States.) Only a few of the works here border on abstraction, but the artist led her colleagues to admiration for Bavarian folk art. Her technique, a synthesizing naturalism based on the scaffolding of deft, rapid draftsmanship, is a sort of shorthand cloisonne of glowing, saturated colors depicting still lifes, interiors, landscapes, and several remarkable, perhaps comic, deadpan portraits. Scholars should also consult Shulamith Behr's short essay on Munter in Delia Gaze's Dictionary of Women Artists (Fitzroy Dearborn, 1997). The work of Gabriele Munter (1877-1962) shines like a jewel in the male-dominated avant-garde Expressionist movement. Most accounts of the frenetically creative years in Munich and Murnau fail to recognize the uniqueness of Munter's vision: her work is unjustly eclipsed by that of her colleagues, not least Vassily Kandinsky's. This book redresses the balance. Some one hundred of the artist's most seminal works are reproduced in this lavishly illustrated volume; they include several from private collections that have never before been published. "Gabriele Munter: The Years of Expressionism, 1903-1920" is an exploration of Munter's crucial contribution to German Expressionism in the genres of landscape, portrait and still-life painting. Her place and significance in the development of this movement are critically examined, with particular attention paid to the iconography of her paintings and the lyrical strength of her work.

I purchased this book when I visited this exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum.I found the show and the book to be worthwhile.Munter painted on cardboard (covered with linen). Most of the work is small. My favorite Munter painting is the one on the cover. owned by MAM . It inspires me to work in a figure/abstract approach. She has a good color sense. From the catalogue we see how she used sketches to develop her paintings.One example that is reproduced is of a painting she did of Jawlensky. The reproductions are extensive and good. They are limited because : she didn't do much work after Wassily married another women .. As you can see in the painting in "Boating" ,Kandinsky dominated her thoughts. He had encouraged her work.Although their marriage (wassilyand gabriele) didn't have the blessing of clergy,it was considered one.they went through a long legal dispute over the property (paintings and writings) that Kandinsky left with her. With the kandinsky's that she had plus the collection of Blue Reiter painters ,she created a foundation.Wassily's letter to her on why he couldn't marry her reveal much about him.He talks about poetry and art, his great soul, he didn't feel he had the same passion for her as he did for art. Despite that she went on to a life ,where she contributed to the art scene in the Munich area.She gave her collection of art work to the local museums. The author Reinhold Heller is an expert on German Expressionism. I own his book on Munch and this book is as carefully researched and written as the Munch . MAM has the largest holdings of Munter outside of Germany.Milwaukee and St Louis with large German populations both have large ,splendid collections of German art.
