A different work by the Queen-guitarist, and the first complete filmscore written exclusively by himself. Compared to Queen's Flash Gordon, it's a huge step forward. Composed like an extended suite, the music centers around the main "Furia"- theme, which is altered through various interpretations, flute, guitar, violin, voice (vocaleezed by daughter Emily), and short passages from the film (in French). Sudden interuptions of the smooth flow of the music are a Tango piece, reggae, and a light techno passage, of which only the latter is performed and written by Brian ("programmed" would be the better description). Throughout, the music maintains a certain organic and smooth atmosphere, even in the intended "harsher" moments. The guitar is rarely heard, magnificiently on the main theme, and a couple of other tracks, with the only remaining real "song" of the album being "Dream of thee", his own vocal version of the theme. Nevertheless, it's a good one! Compositionally, this record strives for more stars, the straight pop fan on the other hand should be cautioned. This is unusual stuff for Brian, comparable probably to his yet to be released stage score of MacBeth in the late 80s from which glimpses appeared on his first solo album.
