In Full Moon, einem der besten wissenschaftlichen Fotobände, die jemals herausgebracht wurden, präsentiert Michael Light eine Bilderreise zum Mond und zurück. Light nahm Originalnegative der NASA, die von Apollo-Astronauten aufgenommen wurden, und setzte sie elektronisch um. Die daraus resultierenden Bilder sind so lebhaft, dass sie klarer erscheinen als die Realität. Light ordnete die Fotografien als Sequenz und wählte dabei die atemberaubendsten Bilder von jeder Mission, um ein wahres filmisches Erlebnis zu schaffen. Im ersten Abschnitt, der den Start wiedergibt, kann man fast die gewaltige Erschütterung spüren, als die Rakete sich bemüht, der Schwerkraft der Erde zu entkommen. Dann sieht man die lautlose Ruhe der Schwerelosigkeit und den Blick der Astronauten auf eine vollkommen stille Erde, auf der sich leuchtende, weiße Wolken vor unendlichen Ozeanen abheben. Ein Weltraumspaziergang steigert das Schwindelgefühl noch weiter -- der Astronaut erscheint verletzlich und sehr einsam, als er weit über seinem Heimatplanet außerhalb seiner Raumkapsel schwebt. Dann kommt das Warten, während sich die lange Reise in Richtung Mond fortsetzt.

Während man beobachtet, wie die mit Kratern übersäte Oberfläche immer näher kommt, hat man kein Gefühl für Dimensionen, bis man die winzige silber- und goldfarbene Landekapsel sieht, die abgekoppelt wird, um schließlich sanft auf dem Mond zu landen. Die Astronauten verlassen in sperrigen Raumanzügen das vollgestopfte Innere der Landekapsel und bringen zarte Farbtupfer in diese schwarzweiße Welt -- das Gold ihres Gefährts und das Rotweißblau der Flaggenaufnäher auf ihren Raumanzügen. Fünf riesige Aufklappseiten präsentieren unbeschreibliche Ansichten der komplex gezeichneten Oberfläche des Mondes.

Danach kehrt man zurück in den Weltraum -- zur Wiedervereinigung der Landekapsel mit dem Mutterschiff und der Wiederholung der langwierigen Reise zurück nach Hause. Schließlich erlebt man die chaotische Wasserung in der Farbenorgie der Erde.

Ein schöner Abschnitt am Ende des Buches beschreibt jedes Foto mit einer detaillierten Erläuterung, und ein Essay des Autors Andrew Chaikin (A Man on the Moon) verleihen diesem phantastischen optischen Erlebnis noch mehr schriftlichen Kontext. In Full Moon, one of the best science photography books ever published, Michael Light presents a voyage in images to the Moon and back. Light took NASA's master negatives of photos taken by Apollo astronauts and scanned them electronically. The resulting pictures are so vivid they seem more clear than real life. Light orders the photos sequentially, selecting the most arresting images from each mission, to create a truly cinematic experience. In the first section, depicting blastoff, you can almost feel the violent shaking of the rocket as it strains to escape Earth's gravity. Then you see the quiet stillness of weightlessness, the astronauts' view down at a perfectly silent Earth, boundless oceans contrasting with bright white clouds. A spacewalk adds vertigo--the astronaut looks fragile and very alone as he floats outside his capsule far above his home planet. Then comes the waiting, as the long voyage toward the Moon continues.

As you watch the cratered surface get closer and closer, you have no sense of scale until you see the miniscule silver and gold lander dropping gently to land on the Moon. Leaving the cluttered interior of the capsule in bulky, awkward suits, the astronauts bring delicate tracings of color--gold on the lander; red, white, and blue on the spacesuits' flag patches--to this black-and-white world. Five huge gatefolds in this section give you indescribable views of the intricately scarred surface of the Moon.

You return to space for the reuniting of the lander and capsule, and a repetition of the tedious journey back home. Finally, you watch a chaotic splashdown in the riot of colors that is Earth.

A nice section in the back of the book explains each photo with a detailed caption, and an essay by author Andrew Chaikin (A Man on the Moon) adds more written context to this stunning visual experience. The book is printed on very high-quality paper, with matte black frames for the photos and a gorgeous, wordless cover. Every space fan should have a copy. --Therese Littleton

Closer to Half Moon, I'm sorry to say... 24. April 2000

As a lifelong "space cadet" (i.e., astronaut wannabe who never will), I looked forward to this book after reading about it in a recent New Yorker story about the renovated planetarium in NYC. I was somewhat disappointed, for several reasons: (1) several pictures were blurred (absolutely inexcusable for this kind of project, and incomprehensible with so many 1000s of pictures to choose from); (2) too much black space (i.e., empty black pages that - even allowing for the aesthetics of leaving a page blank so as to focus on a single picture - left me with the feeling of too much wasted space that could've been used for fabulous pictures; (3) not enough pictures we hadn't seen before, and too many we had; (4) too many moon detail shots that began to look like one another; (5) and digitization of many photos made them look artificial. Having said that, there were 3-4, maybe 5, absolutely stunning shots of the earth that just take your breath away (not the usual "Earthrise" ones - closer in). For those of you who love space photos, NASA has audio-visual units that sell copies to average citizens (of course, we HAVE paid for them already, in a manner of speaking, but they're wonderful for a personal collection). If you're in DC, you can just stop in at NASA HQ and peruse from a selection of 100s/1000s. I suspect other NASA facilities may do the same.

Probably the closest thing to being there..... 15. September 1999

This book is a work of art. If you'll refer to the first critique in this section, you'll see why ("Oh, if they'd only consulted me," he says....Indeed, Sir. Those that can, do. Those that can't, critique.) "Full Moon" isn't you run of the mill, "oh I've seen that shot a thousand times" rehash but a real effort to communicate the awesome mystery and solitude of the place. The photos are presented without captions and numbers so as not to interrupt the visual experience. They are reproduced to such a high quality that they seem almost three dimensional. Some image choices are not obvious and communicate a feeling instead of fact. This is moon surface photography as poetry. Just as Gene Cernan's brilliant book lends new emotion to the experience, "Full Moon" offers new eyes. Worth three times the price.

This book is absolutely incredible! The quality of the photos is simply outstanding, making the moon shot feel like it just happened yesterday not 30 years ago. It brought back all the goosebumps I felt as a highschooler when the astronauts first stepped on the moon. Presenting the pictures separate from the text makes you focus entirely on the visual before you. The foldouts are so impressive and encompassing.

In addition, the essay answered basic questions about the space program brought up by the photos but kept it short enough to not read like a history book. This is a book I'll return to again and again. Already I have run after friends, book in hand, shouting, "Look at this one! Look at THIS!" A fabulous additon to anyone's library but most especially for anyone with even the slightest interest in the space program. It offers an artist's interpretation and presentation of a truly amazing and life-altering event.
