SaGa Frontier II is a rich and rewarding RPG to play. Totally unlike its predecessor, SFII features hand-drawn backgrounds and characters, two different types of battle systems, and a story which chronicles three generations of the two most important families of a century.

The game progresses much like a children's storybook, yet the story is as complex and political as any modern tale. The player proceeds through the game in segments, choosing each "chapter" by title from the world map. There are two unique storylines to follow, one featuring the legacy of a young man who failed to become King, the other featuring the quest of William Knights and his two ancestors to rid the world of an evil from beyond. As each chapter is completed, new chapters pop-up on the world map. There are many interesting stories to watch and to engage in, and many side quests to conquer.

Gameplay features 2D characters moving in richly detailed 2D environments. The many screenshots to the right give you an idea of the fine quality of graphics. Combat features fully rendered 2D characters and enemies in vibrant 3D backgrounds, with camera angles panning all around the area as you engage in swift and deadly battles. Combat features two unique fighting systems. Team combat tests your skills to control a party of up to four characters against a team of baddys, and Duel Combat pits you against a single opponent. In both types, you must learn combat skills called the "Arts", and there are many types of arts for each type of weapon, plus Martial Arts and Spell Arts.

Spectacular special effects accompany the use of all Arts. In Team Combat, you command each character to use the Arts against the opponents. In Duel Combat, you must "program" individual moves to execute new and learned Arts. Some Arts can only be learned and used in Team Combat, and the same goes for Duel Combat except that players may also learn higher-level Custom Arts as well. So there are advantages to becoming adept at both kinds of Combat, and it is a truly unique and rewarding system.
