Sprawling Munich (Munchen), home to some 1.3 million people, is the capital of Bavaria, and one of Germany's major cultural centers (only Berlin outranks it in terms of museums and theaters). Lesen Sie die erste Seite

Not as bad as the other dude says... 26. Dezember 2001
Von Stephen Lum - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
As someone who visited Munich and who is soon to relocate and start working there...I had to set the record straight about this book. Contrary to the one other review, this is a good book. The thing I like in general about Frommer's is that they present you with an itinerary; if you need to hit the 'must see places' then this is your book. Sure the must see places are all overrun by tourists...but some of them as we all know are a must. For example...Hofbrauhaus is where every visitor wants to go...but truth is no native Munchener hangs out there...all tourists. But ya gotta do it.
When I went to Munich, I travelled with this book and Lonely Planet Munich...Lonely Planet doesn't provide you with a 'must see places' list, but it is more detailed. Together they complemented each other perfectly. I recommend spending the extra money for the second book; in contrast with the amount you are spending on everything else during your whole's well worth it.
As for the other reviewer's bad experience...Germany's service people(hotel staff, waiters etc) are typecast as being slow and having attitudes...waiters especially. And that info is actually in this book.
Hope this helps. Have fun in Munchen.

Had all the info. I needed 31. Oktober 2002
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I usually travel with two or three travel books and at some point in my last trip to Munich I just threw away my other book. The Frommer's book had everything I needed in regards to seeing all the major attractions, and I ended up relying on it more than the other book I brought. I thought it was accurate and had great info. on restaurants and hotels.
Inspires Alpine Dreams 3. Mai 2011

Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Frommer's Munich and the Bavarian Alps: This book was so compelling that I had my husband read it aloud to me every night while I was taking a shower. I didn't want to miss a word. During the winter it made me dream of a summer vacation far from the heat of Tucson, Arizona in the shadow of the Alps Mountains. I imagined myself in Munich and Berchtesgaden. In Munich I was going to see the Residenz, the home of Bavaria's 700-year old royal family, the oldest in Europe, the Wittlesbachs. The archways where the appearance of all the towns of Bavaria has been preserved in paintings sounds fantastic. It's amazing how they survived the bombing of Munich during World War II. Now all I have to do is get there!

Update: I got there all right in the summer of 2012. The Residenz was under construction that summer, but we drove up in front of it anyway and honked in case it might remember my winter dreams about it. Instead we went to the Hofbrauhaus and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. It was right next to the Mandarin Oriental, a grand historic hotel. And my Alpine dreams were fulfilled by a visit to Berchtesgaden. We climbed up a 24 percent grade to reach the Obersalzberg. We ate at the Berggastof and gazed out the big picture window. The Alps were so close that you could reach out and touch them.

Buy something else 31. Juli 2009
Von J. Epperson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Do not buy this book. It's awful.

In most cases, the info is sparse or just wrong. Museums that are worth seeing aren't even mentioned. Other museum prices were no were near correct (thankfully less than the book indicated). Some of the biggest attractions get nothing more than a simple paragraph. One item I looked up in the index took me to a specific page. When going to that page, there's once sentence saying see page 174 instead, which was not listed in the index to begin with.

Very little practical information. Want to know when the subway starts in the morning? Get a different book with real info. Want to know best approaches and economical ways to buy train tickets? Get a different book. Aside from a couple of the maps, this book was completely useless in most cases and went into the trash as I got on my last train to the airport.

All in all, this book is garbage. Buy another one if you're going to Munich.

highly recommended hotel is a nightmare! 9. August 2001
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
The book highly recommended the 'Splendid" hotel. IT was the worse hotel I have stayed in, even for Europe. I have spent 2 months in budget hotels in Italy, and this hotel was worse than all of them.
The windows overlook a tram, which sounds like an earthquake or a plane landing on the roof. No insulation, the windows must be a hundred years old. The bathroom fixtures were broken.
When I was checking out, their modem did not work. They held my credit cards hostage for 30 minutes while a taxi meter was running. The red headed women manager never apologized due to their incompetence. The stay at the hotel was terrible.
