I gave it only 3 stars because the title is somewhat of a misnomer, it should be titled "SF With Kids on a Budget". As with all Frommers's guides, this one is concise, detailed and up to date. However, as with all Frommer's guides, this guide also assumes that 1. you are flying coach, 2. you are on a tight budget. This is disappointing because this guide is catered to families travelling with children and not young backpackers on shoestring budgets.

Since the author may be confused about her target audience, she dishes potentially awkward (embarrassing?) advice such as, under "Free...things to do with your kids in SF": "...take in the panoramic views from the top floor bar of the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel". Imagine the scenario - a family with excited kids entering an upmarket bar in a 5-star hotel, just to "take in the view", and telling white-gloved waiters to "hold the orange juice, we'll just have water, tap water that is, 6 glasses please". Or another under "Bargain Alerts": "for $9.50 and a one-drink minimum each, you can feed the kids at the Fairmont Hotel's (5 Star) Tonga Room during happy hour..." That says it all. 18-year-old springbreakers may find such tips appealing but certainly respectable parents would be loathed to leach on freebies to "feed" their kids. I am embarrassed to even read it. The book is filled with such all-you-can-eat-buffet type advice.

I would recommend the book for the amount of visitor information it contains, however be aware that the author slips in "free" or "cheap" advice wherever possible which may leave you feeling like a tacky tourist. If that is OK with you, go ahead and buy this book. The layout is typical Frommers, easily accessible and informative.

Probably great when it was current but its old 29. August 2013

To be fair I knew this book was old when I bought it. I wanted the kid oriented view and I got that. It did help me chose where we wanted to go. However, the fact that I then had to follow up online to check hours, costs, public transportation information, and food options in that vicinity because the book was so old was more of a problem than I expected. It was unfortunately not as much help as I had hoped because I had to do so much outside research. If I had it to do over I would just buy the current general version of the guidebook. It's too bad the kids version isn't updated....

This was the first time we took the kids to San Francisco... 20. August 2003
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
With the use of this guide, we were able to find the inside scoop on all the favorite family attractions, ranging from Fisherman's Wharf, to the Exploratorium, and even the cable cars. The author obviously had children of her own and knew all the hot spots for families. The planning guides, colored maps, and reviews on hotels and restaurants made our first trip memorable!

Unbelievably useful 24. August 2008

We hadn't been to SF in years, and not with kids. So although I knew the city a little, I can't tell you how great it was to have all the information in this book for traveling with kids. I also bought the Fodor's book--"50 things to do with kids in SF" but it wasn't nearly as helpful--just a (very good) 50 item list. The Frommer's book by contrast is a complete travel book with great restaurant choices, itineraries, how to find bathrooms (hard to do with the homeless problem), etc.

Great San Francisco Resource! 28. Februar 2008
Von Homeschooling in CA - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
We've taken two recent trips to San Francisco with our kids (15, 11 and 2). This book proved to be invaluable! I carried it in my purse whenever we left the hotel.

The restaurant recommendations are fantastic! We were not disappointed with a single one we tried. We ventured into neighborhoods we might not otherwise have due to the detailed information in this book.

This resource is a must have for those travelling to San Francisco with kids!
Great for sightseeing; outdated for hotel info 26. April 2013

I love how the book is clearly written by a parent. It contains lots of helpful information about pretty much anything you need to know for traveling with kids. It also suggests age brackets for the various attractions, which I found particularly helpful.

Since this was our first family trip to San Francisco (March 2012), I relied on the book's hotel recommendations and ended up paying more than I wanted, so we could stay at one of the most highly recommended hotels. That turned out to be a disappointment; when we inquired at the front desk about the "welcome bag for kids", we were told they had not provided that in over 2 years. The room itself was fine but small.

Would I recommend this book/series? YES! Just confirm a few things with the hotel of your choice before you make your reservation.
