Excellent California Travel Resource 6. April 2012
Von Bryan Carey - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
California is a great place to visit. The Golden State arguably has more natural attractions than any other state and it is no wonder that so many millions of tourists head to this west coast wonderland for vacation each year. Frommer's California Day by Day helps visitors find the best the state has to offer, from the best parks to the best restaurants and more.

This travel guide is an excellent resource about all things California. The guide is divided into sixteen chapters that highlight a specific place or that feature a listing of best places in a specific category. A tourist can open the guide, go directly to an area of interest, and discover some of the best places to see and the best things to do. The attractions can be most anything, from the natural to the man- made, and the guide also includes star- rated recommendations on restaurants, lodging, and other things to make your trip the best it can be.

California Day by Day has many strong points and among the things I like best about this guide are its organization and advice for those with limited time. Within each chapter, there are lists of places to go and things to see with the name highlighted in boldface, followed by a short amount of info on each. This makes it easy to quickly scan a list of attractions and find the ones of interest. The end of each chapter includes a fast facts section that supplies important information on transportation, sales taxes, visitor's centers, and more. And the guide offers some ideas for finding the best places to visit if all you have is one, two, or three days of available time. This is very useful to the person visiting a California city for, say, business who has only a few days to soak up the best the area can offer.

Frommer's California Day by Day has over 700 pages, but it is surprisingly compact and the amount of info the guide contains is even greater than its 700 pages would indicate. The blurbs of info on each attraction are often short, but this is still an excellent resource for anyone who is planning a visit to our most populous state and is looking for travel ideas

Thanks, Frommer's - you made life so much easier 23. März 2012

My wife was planting the seeds for the idea of moving out of state to be nearer to her family, most of whom recently moved from California to North Carolina. Then this book arrived and I read through it and came to the realization that no state holds as many natural and cultural wonders as California and how could I ever want to live elsewhere?

I mean, c'mon, how is it fair that one state has so many wonderful regions and attractions? Wine Country, Sierras, San Francisco, Mendocino, Silicon Valley, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, the desert, the delta, Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Diego, to name the most popular. Okay, Silicon Valley is getting really old, but the rest is still great, and this book made me want to go see it all again!

This guide does a very good job of paying tribute to it all. This book has some great sidebars regarding the history, best drives, best small towns, best architecture, best museums, hotels, festivities, etc, etc. And of course, traveler information, weather, culture, and more. The included fold-out map is nice quality, but is small and is pretty much just a highway map. Guidebooks never have enough photos, but this one does better than most, with good photography and nice maps.

The book gives a lot of suggestions for how to see the most with what time you've got, and they do an admirable job, but if you really want to see California, you better just move here, because there's so much to see, and it ain't exactly a small state.

ALSO - I got this book at the same time as Frommer's California 2012 book, which has 200 pages more than this one, and costs a few dollars less, but I think Day by Day has a friendlier, more interesting look, more photos, and is more pleasurable to read, while still providing the vast majority of information in the other one. Since I gave that one 4 stars, this one really deserves 4.5.

A Truly Inspiring Travel Book 19. April 2012

I read and review a good number of travel books and this one is a clear favorite. I am a native Californian and have traveled extensively throughout the state, but this little book offered so many ideas in a clear and concise manner, I realize there's so much more to see and do here.

What sets this book apart from other travel books is that it focuses on the best that California has to offer, going beyond the typical listings of hotels and restaurants. There is something for everyone - from zoos and amusement parks to the high desert, the Sierras and picturesque Central Coast. This book was written by longtime residents of California who take pride in the state's many offerings and cared enough to include trips that thrill natives and visitors alike. A few years ago, I reviewed a similar book by Lonely Planet that attempted to present a book such as this, but failed by delivering trite, impractical itineraries that were ultimately more confusing than inspiring.

This is the book you want if you're looking to experience California in all its glory. Highly recommended.

Road trip heaven! 27. März 2012

I live in California and am always up for a getaway. This excellent guidebook describes short trips through all of California's unique and fascinating areas from busy cities to outdoor playgrounds like Yosemite and Big Sur. The writers are witty as well as informative and give helpful descriptions of cities, attractions, hotels, and restaurants and their prices.

Once I opened the book, I couldn't put it down; I found myself smiling and each page made me want to pack my bags. There are bright, color photos on every page and many easy-to-read maps (plus a larger, pull-out state map that's good for getting the big picture). If you'd like to tiptoe in the tide pools of Malibu, watch thousands of elephant seals sunbathe on a lighthouse beach, shop like a celebrity in Beverly Hills, or see all 21 Spanish Missions from San Diego to Sonoma, this is the book for you.

I don't think I could tire of reading it or absorb all the tips, historical tidbits, and traveler advice. The book is reasonably priced and highly recommended.

Such a Wonderful book! 6. April 2012

I LOVE this book! I live in the Bay area and I mostly wanted this book for the section on San Francisco. I was hoping to find some fun things to do in the city, and I sure did. My book is filled with sticky notes about all of the places that I want to visit. The book is divided into sections based on different areas of California. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions are very helpful in determining if the activity is the right choice for you.

The very first chapter of this book is all about the best of California. It lists the best restaurants, beaches, hotels, shopping spots and so much more.

The rest of the chapters are laid out the same way. The beginning of the chapter gives you a plan on how to visit the best of an area depending on if you have 1 week or 2 weeks to visit.

I'm so excited to explore even more of this book and see what else I can discover!
