Anybody old enough to remember Fritz Wunderlich doesn't need convincing that this was one of THE great 20th-century voices. If he hadn't died at such a ridiculously young age, he might well have become THE voice of the century. In this 7-CD collection we hear him in "Don Giovanni", "Butterfly" and "Bohème" (delicious), but also in the much rarer "Mignon" (a treat!) and the utterly adorable "Martha" (where he finds a congenial partner in Anneliese Rothenberger). If you love opera for the music and not for the stars, it's a must. This was a man who who didn't need anything else but his voice to become immortal. It's a beautiful memento to the time when you didn't need to see an opera to adore the singers. It's magic, pure and simple.
