(Bee-) Charming !!!!!!, 26. Februar 2006
After more than 60 other reviews, it becomes kind of hard to write on this wonderfully charming and heart-touching novel by author Fannie Flagg. What is not said already ? What is important to mention ? I`ll try anyway, because this book is a real treasure, a precious pearl to the romantically loving heart as well as a wake-up call against racism and prejudice to the open mind. Well, first of all there is senior Mrs Threadgoode, occupant of Rose Terrace Nursing Home in the mid-80th, who starts to tell her newly found friend Evelyn Couch, a middle-aged married middle-class woman whose main concern is to make things right for everybody else, but who is either unable or unwilling to look at her own talents and needs, and therefore with an inclination to depression, the story of 1920th, 1930th small town Wistle Stop in Alabama, and particularly the story about bee-charmer Idgie Threadgoode (sister-in-law to old Mrs Threadgoode), the love of her life Ruth, Ruth`s little son who was called Stump, Big George, Idgie`s closest friend since early childhood, Momma, Poppa, Buddy, Sipsey, Onzel and many others. Idgie and Ruth run the only cafe in town, the "Wistle Stop Cafe", with love, devotion and a great sense of humour. Threatened by the Ku Klux Klan and the accusation of murder the main characters act inspiringly bravely without loosing any of their humanity. That`s just what this book is: VERY INSPIRING, UP-LIFTING and (BEE-)CHARMING !! I can recommend it to both the bookworm as well as the occasional reader ; while the whole book contains over 400 pages, each chapter is 1-10 pages long and can easily be read one at a time. Besides hearing 1.) Mrs Threadgoode`s story of Whistle Stop Cafe and 2.) the story of Evelyn Couch`s extraordinary development, the reader will 3.) find more in-detail information provided by Dot Weems, author of "The Weems Weekly" as well as other (newspaper) reports. If it is possible for a novel to change one`s life, then this is it. Give it a try ! P.S.: And even though the movie is not as detailed, it`s also worth seeing, if only for the captivation of this beautiful southern scenery and the supreme acting of Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker who make those characters so rich and deep and funny.

Like coming home., 24. Juli 2000
Fannie Flagg is one of the best writers about the south and "Fried Green Tomatoes" is her best book. Everytime I read this book it is like coming home to the little cafe downtown and to the sound of the old trains that used to pass in the night. The characters are like old friends and the strength of spirit an inspiration. I would recomend this book to any woman who needs a good laugh and a good cry because this book will give you both.

I dare you not to giggle throughout this book!, 10. Juli 2000
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe will make you cry, laugh, and realize, in the end, the strength of the human spirit can prevail over all sorts of evil elementsFannie Flagg, in her characteristic voice, spins a yarn that will have you laughing until it hurts, while at the same time, exposing the horrors of racism and sexism in the south and the rest of the country. She creates the most lovable characters in Onzell, Sipsey, Idgie, Ruth, Momma, Poppa, Big George, Stump, Ninny, and Evelyn Couch. Join Evelyn in her rebirth in the "All-Black" Baptist Church she visits one Sunday, laugh as Vesta Adcock runs over her gardener head as he's napping, (he lives, just a few tires marks!) laugh as Dot Weem reports that her husband burnt down the garage, and forgot to back the car out in order to save his brand new saw! Flagg's voice is truly southern, rich, ripe with humor, pride and seriousness. This book will make you hungry and could easily lead to your gaining weight! Told in a series of short flashbacks, the plot is not easily defined, but is perfect for the book! Read this sweet, lovable, good, book; you'll feel better afterward!
