Excellent! Best treatment of the Classical French (including Watson) available.

This is an excellent book on the Classical French, the best you can buy. If Jacobs wrote a work that covered the entire French (of the magnitude of Watson's PLAY THE FRENCH, 3rd edition), I firmly believe it would be a better book than Watson's! And as many of you know, Watson's book is considered the bible on the French Defense.
I would like to echo what a previous reviewer said: IM Byron Jacobs is an excellent writer, one of the best out there. Now let me get to the book itself!
The author provides complete coverage of the two main branches of the Classical (4.e5 and 4.Bg5). He really gets into the meat of the variations, giving choices of plans at critical points in the early middlegame, and explains very well how these different plans affect the future course of the game. The Odds and Ends is also very well done.
If you play the French Classical, this book is more important to you than PLAY THE FRENCH.

Another Jacobs' classic

He probably hasn't received the acclaim he deserves, but this intermediate player (1600 on ICC) thinks Byron Jacobs' opening works are among the finest on the market. He is a great writer, and has that magical combination of text and variations that sucks you in and really teaches you an opening. This book on the French Classical is one of his best. This opening is very popular and you will be able to use it in a lot ofyour games. The definitive source. Highly recommended.
