By the spring of 62 there is little doubt that Bob Dylan, and the Columbia Records man who had discovered him, John Hammond, had something to prove. Dylan s first album had been a commercial disaster. Mitch Miller, chief of A&R at the label, reported that sales were a mere 2500 copies and, for a time around the hushed corridors of the Columbia, Dylan was being referred to as Hammond s Folly . Recording sessions for Bob Dylan s second studio album, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, began just five weeks after the release of his début LP! By this juncture Dylan had begun writing songs in earnest and by his own admission had moved on a pace since his début on vinyl. The finished album, which for a variety of reasons would take a full year to complete, contained amongst others the classics: Blowin in the Wind , Masters of War , A Hard Rain s A-Gonna Fall , Don t Think Twice, It s All Right and Girl from the North Country . Presented here are the songs and takes recorded in Columbia studios over seven sessions during 1962 which have not previously been made available by the artist s record label. Providing for the first time a step-by-step, session-by-session audio-guide to the making of this classic album, this CD serves as both a truly significant historical document and as a hugely enjoyable collection of early Bob Dylan recordings.
