Kurzbeschreibung

Mende Nazer’s shocking story of modern-day slavery – told in the global best-seller ‘Slave’ – touched the world. Later made into a film, it told the harrowing story of a girl from the Sudan taken into captivity, and then sold into slavery. Written by the award-winning journalist Damien Lewis, it exposed the brutality of the modern slave trade, and turned it into a major global issue.

In this, enthralling, moving sequel Mende Nazer tells how in the summer of 2007 she embarked upon a journey back to her homeland in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. She left behind the relative security of London, her new home, to return to the war-ravaged land of her birth.

But she would be risking everything she had fought for in an effort to make contact with the family she’d lost when she was taken into captivity. And over an epic, harrowing journey, Mende discovers what freedom really means.

It is a story that will touch the hearts of millions.

Slave received rave reviews:

‘A powerful memoir...shocking and very moving...her book is an eloquent testament to the ability of a brave soul to survive, and to the need to bring an end to slavery’ - Susan McKay, Sunday Tribune.

’All the cliches of such survival stories - 'life-affirming, heart-warming'- are inadequate to describe the emotional impact of [Mende's] eventual deliverance.’ – The Observer.

’Intensely moving’ - Waterstone’s Books Quarterly.

’An eloquent testament to the ability of a brave soul to survive, and to the need to bring an end to slavery’ - Sunday Tribune.

I had not read the first book "SLAVE". But I found the narrative of this book felt personal and free from political or stilted language. It just felt natural, as though the author were sitting in front of me telling her story. That may be the result of her roots in a culture that still practices oral story-telling.
This book certainly is enlightening and helps the reader understand some of what is happening in Sudan. It also sheds light on how various people and organizations are responding (or not) to the situation there.
I would recommend the book.

Freedom: The Sequel to Slave is the emotional story of Mende returning home to visit her family. After days of anticipation and worry for whether her family would make the dangerous journey from Karko to Kauda Mende is finally reunited with her family after 14 years of separation. Freedom was incredibly moving and shocking in some parts. It is a real eye opener to not just the atrocities in Sudan but wordwide.

I gave this a 2 for one reason only and that is because of all the errors! It is really a pet peeve of mine to pay good money for a book and find so many errors.
The word "wander" was spelled wonder throughout the book.
Here are more examples:
"He inserted the CD and pulled up the first image up on the screen"
"...my Uran teddy bear was one of the few things that I was brought with me."
"...disappeared into a quite corner of..."
"Damien crouched down, pulled out his camera and start shooting photos."
"...No one every comes."
"It was Intesar who finally came and prised Khawa away from me."
"There everyone say, waiting for the speeches to begin."
"I had worked out who he was by now, and he was a bizarre, almost frightening look about him."
"Awad had his head suck under the bonnet,..."
