From Publishers Weekly

Narrator-PI Elvis Cole (last seen in Lullaby Town ) is back, wisecracking but caring and the very model of a modern L.A. tec: he likes Nicoise salads, Evian water and yoga; he says "Sure" a lot. Secretary Jennifer Sheridan--young, pretty and a bit prim--asks Cole to find out what's troubling her fiance Mark, a member of an elite LAPD undercover squad, who has become withdrawn and won't talk about his work. Elvis skeptically takes the case and is immediately warned off by Mark, who says he's seeing another woman. Although a brief investigation seems to prove this, when Cole breaks the news to stalwart Jennifer, she convinces him to dig deeper. He uncovers a possible wrongful-death case against Mark's team that leads to complications, including the framing of Cole and his Rambo-like partner Pike on a murder-and-drug rap. They break out of jail and begin a desperate fight against a vicious drug dealer, the LAPD and Mark's squad. Scriptwriter Crais ( L.A. Law , Hill Street Blues ) excells with both action scenes and characterization; this fast, intricate, very satisfying thriller should send new readers back to his earlier books. Major ad/promo.

Private detective Elvis Cole takes Jennifer Sheridan's case, which involves her decorated Los Angeles-cop boyfriend in some mysterious trouble, and Cole and his partner Pike are soon plunged in police corruption, gangs, and the depiction of themselves as armed killers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Time Wounds All Heels While Love Heals All Wounds 3. April 2004
Von Donald Mitchell TOP 500 REZENSENT
If you have yet to begin the marvelous Elvis Cole series by Robert Crais, you've got a great treat ahead of you! Few series get off to a stronger start than Mr. Crais did with The Monkey's Raincoat, which won both the Anthony and Macavity awards for best novel while being nominated for the Edgar and Shamus awards as well. Stalking the Angel followed powerfully with classic noir style of the 1930s hard-boiled detective up against evil moderated with wise cracks. Lullaby Town brought Hollywood-oriented detective fiction into the 1990s with style and grace. And the books just keep getting better from there in their characterizations, action, story-telling and excitement.

Elvis Cole is the star attraction, the co-owner of The Elvis Cole Detective Agency. He's now 39, ex-Army, served in Vietnam, ex-security guard, has two years of college, learned to be a detective by working under George Feider, a licensed P.I. for over 40 years, does martial arts as enthusiastically as most people do lunch, and is fearless but not foolish. He's out to right the wrongs of the world as much as he is to earn a living. Elvis has a thing for Disney characters (including a Pinocchio clock), kids, cats, scared clients and rapid fire repartee. He drives a Jamaica yellow 1966 Corvette Stingray convertible, and usually carries a Dan Wesson .38 Special.

His main foil is partner, Joe Pike, an ex-Marine, ex-cop who moves quietly and mysteriously wearing shades even in the dark . . . when he's not scaring the bad guys with the red arrows tattooed on his deltoids, which are usually bare in sleeveless shirts. Although he's got an office with Elvis, Pike spends all of his time at his gun shop when not routing the bad guys with martial arts while carrying and often using enough firepower to stop a tank.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not bad, but is that an endorsement? 22. Mai 2000
The trouble with the Elvis Cole novels is that they generally end with a logic-defying assault on credulity. The plot holes in this story of police corruption, would, if the plot were a dress, get a girl arrested.
But it's passable and amusing stuff, and the real climax, a confrontation between an old Marine and a street punk, is worth the price of admission.
If you are looking for one good Crais novel, you actually have two to choose from: For the straight stuff (Cole up front), try *Voodoo River.* For all out best of show, read *L. A. Requiem,* which focuses on Joe Pike, a much more interesting character than super-cool Elvis Cole.

Elvis Cole and Jo Pike are the best duo in crime
fiction today! Fast action, smart plotting, and a P.I.
who just doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.
What more could you ask for

Robert Crais blew me away with entry (my personal favorite) in his Elvis Cole series. Tons of action, suspense, and plot twists that will keep you reading well into the night.
