Kurzbeschreibung

Frederica and the Viscountess
June 1815. Joanna, Viscountess Norland arrives at her brother’s country residence, Thornbury Park. Her notoriety and recent exploits on the war torn Continent precede her, and her presence in the quiet neighborhood causes quite a stir. Scandal aside, Frederica must continue her visits there or forfeit the attentions of the Viscountess’s dull brother-in-law and endure her mother’s tiresome reminders that she’s getting past her prime.

Complications arise when a friend from Joanna’s checkered past, Lord Peregrine, takes a fancy to Frederica’s younger sister. Frederica and the Viscountess join forces to stop a potential scandal and discover they have more in common than anyone would suspect.

The Adventures of Murdering Meg
Five years ago, plantation owner Thomas Digges and his sons left Margaret Etherege for dead. Now known as Murdering Meg, a notorious pirate, she’s ready to exact her revenge on her former master. And when a brigantine sets sail for England, with Digges’s nubile daughter Alice and her dowry on board, Meg decides to relieve its captain of his valuable cargo.

Regency Romance 19. Februar 2012
Von Chris in D.C. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
Frederica and the Viscountess is a nice, but short Regency period romance. Also, there is an added bonus of two short stories pertaining to a pirate by the name of Murdering Meg. True to the form of many Regency romances we have one of the main characters, Frederica, as the innocent daughter of one of the local landed families meeting with the worldly and scandalous character, who in this story happens to be a woman, Viscountess Joanna Norland who rides astride and often dons male apparel. The Viscountess is beyond the pale and it is only her brother's title and residence in the community at Thornbury Park manor that keeps her from being totally shunned. Joanna is introduced to Frederica when she is asked to chaperone Frederica and her brother-in-law, who is courting Frederica, and is staying at Thornbury Park until his manor is built. Frederica tries to maintain a superficial friendship with Joanna, but the two grow closer when Joanna's younger sister finds herself at the mercy of scandalous Lord Perry. Frederica seeks Joanna's help in removing her sister from a situation that could ruin her. Joanna and Frederica fall in love, but there remains the problem of how the two can arrange to live together without causing scandal. I enjoyed this story, though the events were expected. The absence of a passionate scene between the two main characters was disappointing. I agree with another reviewer that the author does a nice job capturing Jane Austen's style and mannerisms that was present in Pride and Prejudice. The second set of two short stories were about Murdering Meg, a pirate captain. I did not find these stories as entertaining as the main story. I would recommend this story for those who like a nice and innocent Regency romance.

Fun book to read 9. April 2011
Von Sage320 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This book is unusual in that it combines two stories that have no relationship to each other. The first is a homage to Jane Austen and tells the story of a sheltered country woman and the notorious Viscountess who comes to stay in her neighborhood. The book also contains two short stories about a pirate named Murdering Meg.

Davies does an excellent job of emulating Austen's style and mannerisms in the story of the viscountess. The influence of Pride and Prejudice will be obvious to any reader who is familiar with that book. The nice thing about the book is that Davies stays true to the period in dealing with the love affair between the women. They're not running around in the early 19th century pretending that no one would have a problem with a lesbian couple. Instead, they come to an accommodation that allows them to disguise their relationship in a perfectly acceptable manner. A method that was probably actually used by women of that period. The story could have been longer and not have such a rushed ending, but overall it's a pleasant tale. The stories of Murdering Meg are just good pirate romps and make nice companion pieces to the larger story.

This is a fun book to read, especially for fans of Austen. The fact that it's broken into three parts makes it convenient for short periods of reading.

Two nice stories 1. Oktober 2010
Von TerryB - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
When the notorious Vicountess Joanna Norland makes an appearance at her brothers manor in Thornbury Park, Frederica's parents are apprehensive to allow her to visit their estate. If they stop her, she will have to forgo the courtship between her and Joanna's dull brother in law. That would be no hardship to Frederica as she isn't at all enamored by him. All hell breaks loose with the arrival of Joanna's friend, Lord Peregrine when he pursues Frederica's younger sister and runs off with her. This results in Frederica and Joanna going on a race against time to prevent a possible scandal. During the course of this, the two women discover they have rather a lot in common with each other.

The Adventures of Murdering Meg. The second story in the book.

Murdering Meg is a pirate of notoriety. She is out for revenge against Thomas Digges and his sons after they left her for dead and took her away from her lover. She bides her time until a brigantine carrying Digges daughter Alice and her dowry departs for England. She intercepts it and takes both Alice and the treasure on board.
Both stories are extremely good. I really enjoy all that Barbara Davies has written.
