Very recommendable !, 22. Juni 2008
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Foundation Expression Blend 2: Building Applications in WPF and Silverlight (Taschenbuch)
Content: Victor Gaudioso wrote this book for
developers who already know the basics of
object orientated programming. The reader
should have some experience with higher
programming languages such as Java, C++ or
even C#, as basic programming concepts are
mostly just mentioned as a reference. The
author teaches the typical WPF/Blend workflow
for creating WPF applications. The basics
of XAML and how it is connected to C# are
covered, together with a complete walk
through of Microsoft Expression Blend 2 and
the corresponding Visual Studio 2008 parts.
Readers will learn how to create reusable
styles and control templates, create events
and event-handlers, use 3D objects, timelines
and storyboard animations. In the end Victor
Gaudioso guides the reader, putting everything
together in four case-studies, using all of these
technologies.
Opinion: Working through this book was an
enjoyable task. While writing my thesis in
computer science I faced the fact that I needed
a GUI for my C# application. As WPF is the
state of the art GUI platform, introduced by
Microsoft with Windows Vista, I decided that
this was the way to go. After trying several other
tutorials I was not satisfied at all with the
outcome, until I discovered Victor Gaudiosos
book at Amazon.com. Upon receiving the book, I
immediately started to read and was surprised
how devotedly the author approached the topic.
The beginning chapter covers the installation
process of the development environment, but
since there is a lot of action at the Microsoft
part, the provided links are changing
weekly. Also ZAM 3D is currently not available
for a trial-download and the VS 2008
Silverlight SDK features some different
characteristics. As the Author wrote links are
about to change so he keeps track of all the
information needed, on his web-site at:
http://windowspresentationfoundation.com.
Except minor changes in the workflow, due to
Microsoft updates, this book is exceptionally
straight forward in teaching the WPF concepts.
Examples are always easy to follow, covering
everything the reader needs to know. All along,
the author surprises with enthusiasm and
esprit. After finishing the book, I had the
feeling that I learned exactly what I expected.
Since this topic is so new, Victor
Gaudioso gets my full respect for writing such
an elaborate tutorial.
