5.0 von 5 Sternen It was so good I read it twice. 22. Oktober 1998
Von Ein Kunde
This book is crammed full of brilliance and wonder. It has adventure and action that would make your head blow off. I would recommend this book to anyone who could read it because it makes your imagination soar. I think this would go well for everyone who doesn't mind sword fighting, spell casting, and evil monsters. This story takes place in a realm that is in the depths of earth called the Underdark. It centers on a Drow. (Drow are elves with dark skin and white hair. They are cousins to the elves that live on the surface.) Most Drow live in the huge city of Menzoberanzan where a lot of the story occurres. The Drow that the story centers on is named Drizzt Do'Urden and you will meet his friends, family, companions, and enemies. It talkes about what he goes through living in the city and what he feels about his people and their ways. This book is full of suprises and turn. Another thing that is awsome is the conclusion to story is great and It's part of a trilogy called "The Dark Elf Trilogy" so after your done with the book there is more action to come. This book swept me off my feet and I couldn't put it down. It was so good I read it twice. This book didn't have any problems with it but if I have to say a bad aspect it would be that in the begining you don't quite understand what is going on, but shortly after everything falls into place. The best aspects are how well they discribe the fights and the surroundings that the elves encounter. This is one of the best books I have ever read and I give it five stars. I hope that you will enjoy this book as much as I have because it's a keeper.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Yes, I liked it. 20. Juni 2000

Having not read any other Salvatore books, I was impressed by this apparantly 'background' piece of a character from another series. In it's own right this is a well-written, engaging work. The city of the Drow underground is believably and interestingly thought out and described, and the characters well-drawn. Drzzt is well-rounded and genuinely catches your attention and empathy. An easy book to get caught up in and just enjoy. Hard to fault for a good fantasy ride - it delivers. Worth buying. I'll see if he can keep it up for the next book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Very well-written, but somehow unsatisfying 24. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
R.A. Salvatore proves himself worthy of being considered among the best Fantasy fiction authors writing today with this definitive novel of the brutal and deadly underground drow city of Menzoberranzan. Salvatore's novel kept me up late turning pages to reveal another chapter of the lives of the amoral and deceitful drow elves while chronicling the life of the young and troubled protagonist, the drow noble Drizzt of house Do'Urden. Drizzt and most of Salvatore's characters are well-developed and capable of inspiring strong emotion in readers whether it be hatred of Drizzt's maniacal and malevolent mother Matron Malice and her brutish, power-hungry daughter Briza or a mixture of contempt and pity for the troubled Sword-Master Zaknafein. I must confess that I was more than a bit turned off by how much of an aberration the highly ethical Drizzt proves to be within the licentious drow society. Much of the plot deals with Drizzt's internal struggles as he is unable to reconcile himself with the depraved ways of his kin and their fanatical devotion to the chaotic and evil goddess, the Spider Queen. However, as the novel progressed, I found myself hoping against hope, even though it became more and more unlikely with each turn of the page, that Drizzt would give in to the murderous ways of his race. Drizzt's high level of morality eventually made his actions very predictable and left me wanting more tales of drow deceit, murder and betrayal unhindered by a tragic hero's moral concerns.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Wow 17. Dezember 1999
I started reading this particular type of genre when I was in the sixth grade ... that was last century ... well, the Ice Age actually. The Lord of the Rings has and always will be a favorite, and it is because of Mr. Tolkien, God rest his soul, that fantasy fiction has flourished. If you pay close attention to the place names, towns, halls, mountains, etc., in Mr. Salvatore's work, you will seem many similarities. MANY.
I am now 27 years old... OY! And I just had the pleasure of reading The Dark Elf trilogy last year, and The Icewind dale books, and the rest of Drizzt's adventures. I was highly entertained, and impressed. My only drawback, is that someone else got to Guen's name before me, so I had to change the spelling. Please forgive me oh gentle creature.
If you have not had the opportunity to read these books, I urge you to do so. Even if you are 10, 30, or 60... everyone could use a great dose of fantasy once in a while. Esp. when it is written with a master's pen...
*Bowing down to Mr. Salvatore, and his liege Mr. Tolkien*

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great fantasy novel, but......... 23. Oktober 1997
I read this book a while ago. Since then I've read many other fantasy novels, there is no compare. You purists may not like to hear this, but this book is better than even J.R.R. Tolkien! Yes, you heard me right. The character of Drizzt Do' Urden is unlike any other character in any fantasy novel. The novel shows us how one individual in a race consumed by evil is able to be different and resist the darkside. I can draw comparisons to Star Wars in that they both show the overcoming of an invincible evil. Unlike most fantasy novels, there are many real life themes in Salvatore's Dark Elf trilogy. Besides the usual good vs evil, you have the question of racism discussed and how you are stereotyped because of the actions of others. All of these themes that you would expect in a real-life novel, you see them in an entertaining fantasy setting. The great writing was continued in Salvatore's subsequent Drizzt novels (though he does kind of descend into the usual swords and sorcery that all of us have seen before). Now you may be wondering why I included the but.... in my summary, well I will tell you. R.A. SALVATORE IS NO LONGER WRITING DRIZZT NOVELS! I don't know what the problem was? Maybe TSR was giving him grief, I don't know, but Drizzt by any other man just isn't Drizzt. PLEASE SALVATORE, WRITE MORE DRIZZT NOVELS!
