Kurzbeschreibung

For the last year, Jay Warren has struggled to find the nerve to tell his wife he’s gay. Every time he gets the chance, though, he freezes up. He’s ashamed of hiding it all this time and he doesn’t want to hurt her, and the guilt has been almost unbearable.

When his wife dies suddenly, Jay’s conscience threatens to eat him alive.

Funeral director Scott Lawson deals with the bereaved every day, and he’s all too familiar with the inside of the closet. He offers Jay some much-needed compassion and understanding, and from that connection comes a friendship that quickly—perhaps too quickly—turns into something more.

But are grief, guilt, and loneliness the only things tying them together? Or will Scott get fed up with being used as an emotional crutch before Jay realizes what he has?

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another Hit for Witt 15. April 2012
Von MeMyselfandI - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
At first, I wasn't going to read this book. I honestly thought that I wouldn't like it. Had it not been written by LA Witt, it would still be in the "maybe I'll buy it, maybe I won't" list in my head. But it was written by LA Witt, who is one of my favorite authors, and I decided to give the book the benefit of the doubt. I'm glad that I did because it's a wonderful novel.

I was worried that I'd never connect with Misty, Jay's wife, because she dies in the first chapter. How was I supposed to like Misty when she winds up dead before the book really starts? How was I supposed to sympathize with Jay when I didn't know who he's mourning for? Luckily, Witt pulled off another literary miracle with Misty. She didn't resort to clichéd flashbacks to make Misty real, but, instead, allowed other characters to speak for her in such a way that, if you're anything like me, you're tearing up whenever Jay cries.

The second concern I had was that the book would take one of two roads - too morbid and gloomy to be a romance or too happy, making Misty's death irrelevant to the story. I'm pleased to report that neither of those things happened. Everything - the good, the bad, the happy, the sad, and the silly - culminated into a breathtaking romance. Jay and Scott's relationship felt real to me, full of mistakes and compromises, but still completely loving.

My third concern was that I wouldn't like Jay or Scott as individuals. Jay could have easily become too consumed with self-pity and Scott could have been a spineless wimp. There's a difference between true grief and self-pity and a difference between being willing to help your partner through a difficult time and being a doormat who won't stand up for themselves. And if you want to see the difference, read this book. Give it a chance.

In short, this book has the drama and trauma of a loved one dying young, coming out of the closet to your friends and family, and finding love at the worst possible time. It shows the harsh reality of life without clobbering you over the head with it all the while telling a delightful love story.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Nice and slow 13. Mai 2012

I must admit it's not my usual style but focues a lot on emotional drama than on action. It is not something to read if you are looking for action but when you are looking for a nice slow paced read this is a great book. The characters are real with real problems and life just isn't simple for them.

Remember don't read when you want action. :) (though there is some in here)

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Perfect Summer Romance Novel! 5. August 2014
Von PJM - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Good "satisfying" (as in I was felt complete when I finished it) story. Excellent central conflict that the author setup nicely, committed to and stuck with (wasn't glossed over). There were times when I felt the writing was a little trite, e.g. there was a lot of figurative "you like that oh me too" between Jay & Scott, but when it really mattered, e.g. Jay's angst over coming out (will he/won't he) the writer did a really nice job of writing something that grabbed you by the lapels, pulled you in and held on (I sat at work and closed my office door for an hour so I could finish the book...lol). My own conflicts about my sexuality and associated coming out were 20 years ago, but the author did a great job of reminding me of the emotions I felt at that time. I nice love story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Must Read 14. April 2014
Von Samantha Hostetler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I absolutely loved this book. The issues plaguing Jay were dealt with in such a great and reality based way. I read it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with both characters, but I have to say Scott was absolutely amazing. Patient, kind, understanding and incredibly hot....who could ask for more?
I wish I could articulate this review better, but it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm spent. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a book with heart, hot sex and depth.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Skillfullly written, finely wrought, quite entertaining 10. August 2014
Von Russell J. Sanders - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
L.A. Witt’s For the Living is a tale of love, loss, grief, and finding love again. It deftly explores the feelings that surround a loved one’s sudden death, while presenting a skillful portrayal of coming out and acceptance of oneself. For the Living is essentially a love story, one of loving a lost loved one, loving a new person, and loving yourself. Jay, the protagonist, meets Scott, a funeral director, under trying circumstances. As their romance buds, Jay must deal with the loss in his life that caused their coming together, and he must also deal with the fact that he is gay and that perhaps others in his life will not accept that. Witt is skillful. Her characters are well-drawn, and I found myself truly engaged with them. It is a finely wrought romance that has more substance than I expected. But I also decided, while reading this, that I’m not a fan of this genre. I loved the characters, the plot development, and the writing. But when Witt ventures—as she does several times—into lengthy four and five page sex scenes, she lost me. Yes, the scenes are hot. They accomplishment the author’s purpose, I’m sure, for those who want to indulge. But I just wanted her to keep advancing the characters and their story, not pause for endless rounds of sex. I’m convinced, however, that since this genre is quite popular, it has an audience that would disagree with me, and that’s fine. 50 Shades of Grey, I’m sure, did not become a mega-seller because of its plot (and I haven’t read that one, so maybe it did) and gay men and others who read this genre get not only good sex scenes here, but they are blessed with characters they care about and a story that is fine-tuned. I recommend the book with reservations, but those reservations are probably mostly my own and not For the Living’s potential audience’s.
