Sparse info - much of it irrelevant. There are better Pantanal books 8. Oktober 2013
Von Andrew Mercer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I got this book as part of the background research for my Pantanal Escapes website, which serves as an online guide to the region. I know the Pantanal really well, as I've been there on many occasions, and have a house there. I was excited to see this guidebook on Amazon because the Pantanal is spectacular if you love wildlife and a truly unique cultural experience.

I knew this was a small book from its description ... but with several pages dedicated with information and maps of São Paulo (definitely NOT part of the Pantanal) there's even less information than I thought. The author should have devoted this space to something relevant. Most Pantanal travellers that I met only passed through São Paulo airport while in transit, or came into the Pantanal via overland routes into Campo Grande from Foz Iguaçu, or straight into Corumbá from neighbouring Bolivia. If you're planning to spend time in São Paulo then I'd recommend that travellers be using something other than a Pantanal guidebook.

As for its content about the Pantanal, this guidebook's information is sparse and often not relevant to the region. For example, n the festivals section it OMITS:

(1) the annual Corumbá Carnaval (biggest in the Central-West with thousands of revellers travelling in from across Mato Grosso do Sul state and beyond, every Feb/Mar),
(2) the Poconé Cavalhada (a colourful spectacle performed by locals on horseback in a stylised medieval recreation of Christians fighting Moors, every June), or
(3) the recreation of ancient African customs in Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade (also every June. This remote town was formerly the State Capital but lost this status in 1835, when it was largely abandoned to its African slave population. It remains an enclave of old African customs which are likely extinct in their original homeland, or
(4) The many rodeos held in the Pantanal region - often accompanied by big shows from Sertanejo music stars.

INSTEAD, the only festivals mentioned are irrelevant for a Pantanal guidebook - such as the Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, and the Boi-Bumbá festival in Parintins (this is an admittedly spectacular festival, and I very highly recommend it ... but its not relevant here. Parintins is far up north in the Amazon region - and it will take you careful planning plus around 5 days to get there from the Pantanal via a combination of bus, plane, and riverboat).

The guidebook fails to mention anything about the culture or history of the Pantanal region. An understanding of this is a big part of getting the real Pantanal experience.

Basically, if you want real information about the Pantanal then you can find far better information online for free. Lonely Planet's Brazil guidebook and other comparable guides will have just as much (and maybe more) Pantanal info than this supposedly dedicated book. In fact, Lonely Planet's website will let you buy just their Pantanal chapter in PDF format for a few dollars less - which you can print or conveniently take with you on an iPad.

Assuming you're going to the Pantanal to experience the wildlife then I'd recommend Pantanal Wildlife: A Visitors Guide to Brazils Great Wetland by James Lowen.

A Pantanal guidebook is a great concept, but sadly this book fails to deliver.

Well written, could have some more general information in parts. Pocket size, can be use in the field. Will be taking it on my next travel to the Pantanal
