Kurzbeschreibung

Millie Barnes is this close to finally achieving her perfect life...

Rewarding job as a local doctor on Cape Cod? Check. Cute cottage of her very own? Check. Adorable puppy suitable for walks past attractive locals? Check! All she needs is for golden boy and former crush Joe Carpenter to notice her, and Millie will be set.

But perfection isn't as easy as it looks--especially when Sam Nickerson, a local policeman, is so distracting. Sure, he needs a friend after being dumped by Millie's fortune-hunting sister, but does she really need to enjoy his company that much? He is definitely not part of her master plan. But maybe it's time for Millie to start a new list...

4.0 von 5 Sternen unaufdringliche Schmonzette 3. Januar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

Warning - contains spoiler.
Kristan Higgins is a author I just recently discovered. I just finished "Fools rush in" by her and absolutly loved it. Higgins manages to make scenarios I normally not enjoy into something beautifull and I can only recommend this book and her other work.
Our heroine is Millie Burnes, the intelligent sister, who is back in her hometown after going away to study medicine. Ever since highschool she dreamed about getting together with Joe Carpenter and now she is back to achieve her dream. She thinks that she knows everything about him (hey, she kind of stalked him more often than not) and that Joe is her perfect match.
So Millie is a girl who likes plans and after managing to make the most out of herself (for the first time she really enjoys how she looks like) she is finally ready to get her guy. And oh boy, does she gets him only to realize after some time that a fantasy is just that: a fantasy that has sometimes nothing to do with reality.
So after breaking up with Joe she realizes that she is in love with somebody totally different: her sisters ex-husband Sam. That's when the trouble really starts because Millie and Sam (of course he has feelings too) find themselves in a weird situation where they have to defend their feelings to their family and they have to decide if their love is worth all the turmoil.
This book is so good, Millie is great and inspiring and she has a bunch of people who care about her, I especially like her gay friends who help her making the most of herself but also staying true to who she really is.
So, if you haven't already read this beautiful and inspiring book get yourself a copy and realize that love sometimes takes the long way and not the shortcut.
Enjoy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen New best author... 23. Dezember 2006
Von Krystal - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
What a great start for this wonderful author. I enjoy romantic novels, however, most of them are too perfect and everything just is so fantasized.

Well in this story about a woman having a crush on a man for over 15 years and stalking him for that long, but later finding that she doesnt really love him is clever.

What i like about this author and about this, her first book, is the fact that the first person character is written wonderfully. You really get to be in Millie Barnes' shoes. Also, the dialogue that she uses is so common and easy to understand. Higgins definitely writes her novels in language that everyone can relate to.

The fact that the main female character falls in love with her ex brother in law is a little weird, but pulls it off wonderfully nonetheless. Sam (Millie's ex brother in law) is portrayed as the best man in the world. He truly is a prince charming.

I definitely recommend this book if you like romantic novels and want a fresh twist to the regulars on Harlequin or the like. Can't wait for her next one..

4.0 von 5 Sternen Charming and funny romantic comedy 17. März 2007
Von Tracy Vest - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Since her freshman year in high school, Millie Barnes has been head over heels for Joe Carpenter. A brainy and plain gal, she was all but ignored by Joe, in an adolescence that was filled with angst, unwanted baby fat, and acne. After stalking him for over a decade to find out his likes and dislikes, she's about to return to Cape Cod, and has a plan for landing her man. Coinciding with her return is the divorce of her older sister, who has relocated to New Jersey with her new man, so she consoles her former brother-in-law Sam and his son with meals and tries to set Sam up with her divorced friend.

Armed with a new body, new job as a physician at the local clinic, new wardrobe, and a funky new hairstyle, Millie does in fact snare her man. But is this Joe the same Joe she's idolized most of her life? As the two begin a relationship, Millie realizes something is missing. Will she follow her heart and attempt a chance withthe man she truly loves?

Higgins first novel is a sweet and romantic comedy told from the protagonist's point of view, which makes for some funny anecdotes and reactions. The sibling rivalry between Millie and the seemingly perfect older sister Trish is poignant (though Trish is a hard character to like). And the interactions between father and daughter ring so authentic, that I envisioned my own late father while reading the story. This one is a gem and not to be missed.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Just okay 15. September 2010
Von CRosaB - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is the second book I read by Kristan Higgins. The first was the next best thing, which I loved. Fools Rush In was very well written. Maybe I am the only who read this book and felt awkward. I thought that after being married to her sister for almost twenty years, Sam should feel like a brother to her. Maybe because my brother in laws both feel like brothers to me, I could not fathom having those types of feelings for them. I just couldn't see how there was a happy ending in this book. I also thought such a smart girl could not possibly be such an airhead to stalk a guy for so long. I don't know, it just felt so weird, for lack of a better word. Also after reading, The Next Best Thing, yet another woman falling in love with her brother in law, it was like okay I think I heard this senario before.

So after writing all of that, I actually really like Higgins style of writing and I might read another one of her books. To the people reading this review, I would recommend reading The Next Best Thing, it was much much better.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Oh, Kristan---it's me, not you! 8. August 2012
Von CHB74 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I'd always remembered this book as my least favorite of Kristan Higgins' novels. Convinced that the problem must be with my sieve-like memory rather than with the book itself, I tried rereading it a couple of months ago, and was pleased by how adorable and engaging and...OH. I soon recalled all too vividly why I could barely bring myself to finish this one the first time around. I try very hard to avoid using spoilers in my reviews, but in order to go beyond a very unhelpful "eh, it just didn't work for me!", this time they can't be avoided. Bear in mind, though, that these spoilers are evident to the reader quite early on!

***************SPOILER ALERT********************

I can deal with Millie stalking the guy she's convinced she's meant to be with though very, very obviously isn't. It's played mostly for laughs rather than as a sign of instability, and sets up a nice 'be careful what you wish for' theme that I can get behind very easily. And so many of KH's heroines are adorably pathetic in this same exact, strangely likable way that it barely fazes me by now. What DOES bother me is that, in all too typical KH-ish fashion, we devote so much time to this clearly-going-nowhere storyline about the guy who's so obviously wrong for her that we hardly get to know the actual "hero" at all. Even the fact that we barely get to know the main male love interest, though, is so typical of KH's books (most of which I feel are more "chick lit" than romance anyway) that it's something I'd happily accept, only...

...that love interest happens to be her sister's ex-husband! And not someone her sister married years ago on a whim and quickly divorced, but someone her sister had been married to for about TWO DECADES! And you can't even dismiss it as ancient history: when the books opens, Sam had split from Millie's sister fairly recently...so recently that he's still actively mourning his marriage to our heroine's sister through much of the book.
I don't come from an especially rigid or traditional family---far from it, in fact. But even I can't imagine pursuing my recently divorced brother-in-law, a guy who had been sleeping with my sister for more than 20 years! The sister is highly unlikable, by the way, though for me that in no way makes this okay---it just means we get stuck reading about an unlikable character.

This scenario happens to be a squirm-worthy dealbreaker for me, but if it isn't for you, you'll probably enjoy this book. :)

***************END OF SPOILERS****************

Like pretty much everything that KH writes, this book has more than its share of charm, humor and warmth. If the issue described above happens to be in the category of things that doesn't bother you (and if you have a fairly high tolerance for KH's typically needy, stalker-y yet sneakily lovable heroines), then I'd recommend hitting that 'buy' button. If the setup happens to make you squirm like I did, though, rest assured that she has many other delightful, mood-lifting books from which to choose!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Lack of Focus, Character Development 1. Mai 2010
Von Elizabeth - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I had previously checked out one library book written by Higgins, and remembering it as pleasant (though not wonderful) I decided to check out another book.

Two books later, Fools Rush In being the first of the two, I was dissatisfied.

As I read Fools Rush In, I continuously expected the real story to start. The description for the book brings more attention to her relationship to her ex brother in law than to her realization that the guy she's been stalking for so long is wrong for her- but the book itself focuses almost entirely on the latter.

We see very little of Sam, what we do see doesn't allow us to know much of him except that he is a great father and an overall great guy (which can get a bit annoying) and that he is, as expected, sulking over the breakup of his marriage.

While I love the scene where something finally happens between Millie and Sam, and Sam seems to have the potential to be extremely likable as a character, I just don't like the way the author chooses to focus on Millie's obsession with Joe Carpenter. It was refreshing and amusing at first, but after a while I was extremely frustrated with Millie's idiocy.

All of the characters were constructed to be either very unlikeable, immature, or simply flat. Millie would be great if she didn't waste so much time on Joe, Joe is just immature and his turnabout seems improbable, Millie's sister and Sam's ex Trisha is just horrid most of the book, and Sam himself was not well developed.

I need a bit more in the way of buildup for a romance than a grand total of two scenes in more than 300 pages that vaguely hint at a possible like, and a rushed ending where the characters come together.
