The Environmental Impacts of Food Choices are Mind Boggling - A Must Read 20. November 2013
Von Judy Lindow - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I'm expecting this book to address the environmental impacts of food choice better than any other book to date. In what I've read so far, the urgency of the issues are really brought home. It's very clear that the dire results of our food choices are due to MORE than just factory farms, they're about eating-animals.

Whereas 'Comfortably Unaware' (the first book) gives a good high level summary, this book restates the issues, gives more details, addresses the current issues, and updates statistics. It also stresses the global scope of the problem and spends more time on solutions (though I haven't read this section yet).

There's good content about the manipulation of the concept of "sustainability". The book also addresses new food movements and advocates who justify meat and dairy, as well as good explanation of extinctions; here the numbers are really sad for how remarkable they are. I appreciate the numbers and references, as I want to be able to know the facts, evidence, and talk with others using sound arguments.

I am now on board with no half way changes. Although it's true, people may not be able to stop all animal exploitation in their lives in one swoop, the import of the situation needs to be stated with honesty. Our commitments need to be whole hearted. Change needs to be made en masse and more quickly if we are to effectively address climate change, community health, world hunger, loss of biodiversity, and more. I'm inspired to improve my activism and personal practice.

A good read, reread, Christmas present for friends and family, can be read alone, with/after the 'Comfortably Unaware'. Can be read by sections or chapters. Great endnotes and index. The book is beautiful, the cover; Langdon Street Press, and all, did a good job.

In Depth and Well Researched Nobel Prize Worthy Masterpiece! 30. Dezember 2013
Von Linda Middlesworth - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Comfortably Unaware was also a well researched and eye opening book, but Food Choice and Sustainability is the book Al Gore should have written. Dr. Oppenlander goes into the consequences of our food choices even deeper. He puts holes in the many myths permeating our media about how we should view our food choices and global warming, land use, water use, energy use, air pollution, etc. Once you read this book, you will immediately understand how and why the general public are misled. He shows that the science does not back up the baseless rhetoric of people like Michael Pollan who claims that grass fed cows are sustainable. I am not finished yet but cannot wait to finish it. My husband could not put it down and bought a pile to give to all our family members and friends. Richard uses scientific studies to back his statements and, in addition, he travels all over the world to observe just how food choice and sustainability play out in real life. Thank you Dr. Oppenlander for dispelling the myths we are fed but those who choose greed over health and environment. Excellent and impeccable work!

Awesone and fact filled book - Bold and Pointed. 1. Dezember 2013
Von rpv - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
Creating awareness is one of the first jobs tat Dr. Richard Oppenlander does. In the modern day and age, food humans eat has a lasting impact - from various angles - planet, moral, ethical. 7 billion plus people live in the world now and what we eat will have a lasting impact for centuries to come. Dr. Oppenlander's work rivals and complements that of Drs. Ornish, McDougall, Esselstyn, Campbell and several others in the western world. I have been very curious and researching on this topic for several years. My family is a hard core vegetarian for several generations for hundreds of years and I am fascinated by vegan and trying to adopt a vegan lifestyle myself as an experimentation. I am very thankful to many plant based recipes and exponents in the last 10 years.

The author starts with the premise that earth's resources are not infinite. This books is not about vegan recipes or health-styles at all but at higher level questions on policy, asking tough questions, and providing solutions. For example, author questions President Obama's statement on climate change and says the President should have told - In order to properly address climate change, we must stop eating meat today. The author in fact urges all of world's leaders to adopt a plant based choices. Some of the facts are outright depressing - India is world's largest exporter or beef. This is in stark contradiction to its religious principles followed over centuries. Pakistan with its 177 million population has 137 million livestock. The author has very strong points and makes some hard data (these data are current as of 2013). Overall a very fact filled book, at times very depressing on the state of the planet and humans but very much needed. We can still change! Each of us can make incremental lifestyle changes making our planets a healthy and fun place to live.

I appreciate Dr. Richard Oppenlander for his bold statement and standing up to the big corporates/lobby groups and even head of nations and putting a very good plan of action. I was provided this book in exchange of a fair and honest review.

The most important book on saving the planet and humanity ever written 24. Januar 2014
Von Adam - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
Please read this book, this simple to read and easy to understand explanation of how our food choices are the number one cause of climate change, water shortages, deforestation, destruction of the ocean, overuse of our land and destruction of our health is the most important and powerful book ever written on the subject matter. Every person on the planet should be required to read this so they fully understand how every bite of food they take reverberates around the world. In other words the food choices you make dramatically impact what happens to our forests, oceans, fresh drinking water, food supply, climate change. Before you read any other book read this one. It's hard to believe that this information is not available to every person when they grow up. This is the number one book I have ever read, more important than any other book I have ever read on the environment or health. This book is purely scientific but very easy to read. There's actually no bias in this book except the desire to save the planet.
