4.0 von 5 Sternen A trip back in time from a literary master 20. Januar 2011
Von Red School Morgan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
A lot has changed in the 144 years since this book was first published. The Boer Wars have fallen out of the headlines and few people today can locate the Sandwich Islands. Yet Twain's insights into what makes us tick, his witticisms and maxims still cut to the quick today. The book is about his journey around the world--to Hawaii, Australasia, India and South Africa. We're immediately drawn into Twain's confidence and see the world then through our friend's eyes--way back then.

Twain benefits from writing when generalizations about groups weren't frowned upon; they were expected. We can't really learn about a country as lage as India without generalizations. Such generalizations could never be made today for fear of offending some group. That said, if a racist is someone who beleives in the superiority of one race over another, Twain qualifies, as do almost all of his contemporaries. But let's not apply today's standards to 19th century authors and let's not that ruin an enjoyable literary journey.

The Digireads version appears to be published with economy foremost in mind. Chapters begin and end mid-page, the font is tiny and the margins are even smaller. Otherwise this book would deserve 5 stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Little read book from a master. 26. Januar 2013
Von Green Eric - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I am enjoying every word of Mark Twain's book about his around-the-world lecture tour. His insight into the world as it was at the time of his journey provides a great snapshot of that time. I have to wonder about those who claim the book is hard to read; among the worthwhile books I've read in my life, this one ranks as being fairly easy to read. His style is slightly reminiscent of Paul Theroux, who incidentally recommends the book in one of his. I highly recommend Following the Equator for anyone who wants to know more about Mr. Clemens or the world at the time in which he lived.

2.0 von 5 Sternen What did Twain Really Think? 1. Februar 2014
Von John Guzlowski - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I read about 100 pages and couldn't take anymore. The book seems like make work for Twain. It feels like most of it was written in his library and it makes me wonder if he actually made the trip. There is little here that seems directly witnessed or experienced. Instead of fresh observations, the reader gets blocks of info from other sources. A cut and paste job. I loved Twain 's innocents abroad and life on the Mississippi.

This doesn't come close.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Twain's daring book, just as relevant today 15. Juli 2013
Von Joyce - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I've looked for this book for years on bookstore shelves & library shelves; never found it. It was referenced in Jimmy Buffett's books, where I first heard of it. I grew up near Hannibal, MO and it's funny how all we heard about was the "cute" fence-painting and the charm of it all, and not a word about the daring (especially for Clemens' day!) satire and brilliantly insightful observations on society and the many injustices here and around the world. Under the down-home, almost innocent style, Twain had a brilliant gift for seeing things as they were (and, sadly, still are) and was never afraid to speak up. This book is a treasure.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting and humorous 30. Mai 2013
Von Ross Burwell - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The book is interesting and humorous, in places, but it is not one of Samuel Clemons best written works. Most of the facts and figures are dated at this point in time so the historical value is of the most significance.

It is my belief that nearly any invented quotation, played with confidence, stands a good chance to deceive. There are people who think that honesty is always the best policy. This is a superstition; there are times when the appearance of it is worth six of it. "e;
