I am finding the " Fodor's Italy Guide" very informative and helpful in planning a trip there this summer. It contains a lot of practical advice along with a rich
historical background of each area of the country. I think it will make our trip less stressful and more enjoyable. It will also be more meaningful to know something about the historicalbackground of the places we visit. Even if we don't have time to see everything, I have enjoyed learning about the history and culture of Italy!

First off, this book is heavy. I haven't weighed it, but it's fatiguing to read. It covers the entire country, which might have been my mistake. I should have purchased separate books for all the cities I visited. This would have eliminated all the waste, and made it easier to read.

I was on an airplane literally trying to tear the book down the middle along the spine. I made a joke to my wife that she should ask a flight attendant for a knife. (close the anniversary of 911, this wouldn't have gone over so well I'm sure)

The coverage of sites is good. The stuff you're going to see is 500-2000 years old, so it can remain pretty consistent. The coverage of restaurants failed on our trip. The authors are clearly interested in getting you out of the tourist-trap areas, and I appreciate that. However, I wound up in some sub-par restaurants that a simple reference to Trip Advisor's website would have eliminated. These days, the internet is keeping communication running super fast, so we are better off keeping up with what's current on the day. A book published a year ago could be completely wrong when a place just changed management or shut down.

I still used the book quite a bit for figuring out what to do with the few days we had in each city. It has some nice itineraries in each section. The main issue again was the bulk of the book didn't get used. I'll definitely buy individual city books next trip.

Not a bad travel book for encompassing a vast number of areas in Italy. Was a little vague on some things in Rome, and the Map is so-so. Traveling from City to City it was fairly useful, and had some good history reads in it. If you are only going to a couple of Cities - like a trip to Rome and Florence - you would be better off buying 3 books - one just for Rome, one just for Florence, etc. If you goto Rome, just get to the Colosseum at 8-830am, waiting there for 30+ minutes beats waiting in very crowded line for 2+hrs, plus you will get to see it empty, so you can actually take photos without a giant crowd inside!
