Also: Ein paar brauchbare Tips hat der Reisefuehrer schon zu bieten. Aber, er ist doch sehr auf amerikanische Beduerfnisse zugeschnitten, die Preise fuer die empfohlenen Hotels und Restaurants sind eher deftig. Und leider sind auch viele Beschreibungen, einschliesslich der beigefuegten Karte, ziemlich ungenau. Wer Rough-Guides oder lonely Planet gewoehnt ist, wird enttaeuscht sein.

Disappointing - significant shortcomings. 24. Juni 2009

Leaving Atlanta and heading down to the coast of Georgia for a week, I visited Savannah, St. Simons, Brunswick, St. Mary's etc. I took with me three guides: Fodor's The Carolinas & Georgia, Frommer's and Moon's: Savannah & the Georgia Coast. Of these guides: Moon's was the best, and then Frommer's, with Fodor's coming in last.

Though the restaurant recommendations are very good (they are more descriptive and more current than Frommer's) and the accommodations are reviewed in depth, including a somewhat avant-garde `pro' and `con' remark which I found insightful, these strengths are not enough to atone for the shortcomings.

Fodor's completely omits important and prominent cities and towns (i.e. Brunswick, Valdosta and others). Even though these locations are not "major tourist attractions" (as are Savannah, Charleston, Atlanta, etc.) they need to be covered to help those who are on the road find accommodation and eateries. Not Good.

Then there is also the lack of maps. Fodor's has done nothing in this guide to help you locate the restaurants and hotels that they recommended. Only Atlanta and Savannah get "stay and eat" maps; not even Charlotte or Raleigh get a map! This means you are on your own, and most of the time it is not easy find where the restaurants, hotels and sites are. It baffles me why would a quality guide skimp on something as important as maps? Not Good.

Normally, travel guides give you a section on the history, culture, customs, and politics of the area. NOT. This guide has zero, zilch to help you understand the rich history and culture of these three states. Again, Not Good.

This guide was well written but the publishers completely dropped the ball on the above. At best: conditionally recommended. 2.5 stars.

I bought this book used to prepare for our spring trip to Augusta. With only two pages covering that destination, this book would be of minimal value to me were we not planning a side trip to Savannah. Those planning trips to Atlanta, Charleston, Smoky Mountains, Hilton Head, or Asheville will probably be very pleased with this 2009 Fodor's Guide. It's a book with over 500 pages, but covering three states the information within must necessarlily be compressed with smallish print and more limited than a volume about one single state.

The usual information is in here: where to stay, where to eat, attractions, occasional street maps, climate, and travel information. Listings for accomodations and restaurants are not lengthy. I'm disappointed that there are no suggestions for those traveling with pets. Also keep in mind that the prices listed in this 2009 edition have most likely increased, so be prepared for some possible sticker shock.
