Philip K Dick notoriously charted SF's most dangerous, booby-trapped realities. Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said (1974) is a relatively straightforward tale of paranoid unease at finding the world isn't what it should be.
Jason Taverner is world-famous for his songs and regular TV show. "Thirty million people saw you zip up your fly tonight." "... It's my trademark." Although this future US is a grim police state with labour camps in Alaska and Canada, jetsetting Taverner enjoys being one of the winners.
Then he wakes up in a sleazy hotel room, still well-dressed and flush with money, but no longer the famous Jason Taverner. No ID--that's a forced-labour offence. His agent doesn't know him. Nor do his closest friends. He's even vanished from police databanks.
Forged documents are needed, hand-drawn by teenaged expert Kathy--one of Dick's most alarming women, a neurotic petty criminal who's also a police informer, who entraps and manipulates Taverner until he's terrified of her. He may deserve it: this self-obsessed megastar inflicts small, unthinking cruelties on virtually every woman he meets.
The title's policeman is another interesting character: Police General Felix Buckman, a mostly good man (and fan of Elizabethan songs: "Flow, my teares...") trapped in a horrible system. Is Taverner, the man with no past, a threat? Less so, maybe, than Buckman's amoral sister Alys, who takes special interest in Taverner and seems to have the world's only copies of his music albums...
Paranoid wrongness is expertly conveyed, and resolved with a typically offbeat SF notion. A sunny finale concludes one of Dick's most approachable novels.--David Langford

Classic Philip K. Dick through and through...and then you get to the ending. I suppose I've probably read a dozen or so PKD novels, and I must say none had a weaker, more anti-climactical ending than this. I must say, it really did feel like a cop-out. The majority of the novel is wonderful, but if Dick had just spent a little more time crafting a proper conclusion, the book as a whole would have been much, much better. I suppose my favourite PKD to date is probably The Game-Players of Titan...or maybe Now Wait for Last Year...or UBIK...oh, forget it. I can't decide. Just read 'em all, but you'd probably be best-advised not to start with Flow My Tears.

I disagree about the weak ending, I think the ending was one of the best ever! I also like the characterizations, the settings, the plot...in short, this book was--not a sci-fi, but a LITERARY--masterpiece. Dick was visionary; I think he could see the future. Just look at the scene where he describes addiction to phone sex; it describes, in vivid detail, the phenomena of internet usage and addiction.

I'll almost second Steven Hancock's comments about Kathy Nelson -- I wouldn't put it quite so glowingly, but I do feel that she is one of the most memorable characters from all of the PKD books I've read (although I'd forgotten her name). Those chapters alone are a good reason to re-read the book on occasion. At the same time, I don't think it would have done much good to expand her character.
I haven't read the book recently enough to post a detailed review, but I can add that I found it a fairly complete and detailed rendering of many of the themes PKD explored throughout his work, and in many respects (and certainly over specific stretches) as good as anything else he wrote.

bang bang bang bang fizzzzzzzzzzzzz
i like PKD, and this was an amazing 5-star novel... up until the end, where it plummeted straight down in a shooting stream of crap for the last 40 pages or so and never came back... Lesen Sie weiter...

Ender wiggen Raves about Phillip K. Dicks masterpiece.
Jason Taverners a talkshow host one day and a bum on the street. Piece the story back together. Dont give up.

Very engrossing and imaginative story
