The 1960s. It has been said if you can remember the decade, you weren’t there. But of course so many were there in that unreal time of self-discovery, free love, throwing over the traces and just riding the most incredible wave of freedom.
It was the time of eternal summer and equally eternal optimism as humanity reached - literally - for the stars, made love and war and revelled as an entire generation shifted gears like no other before it and collectively moved into the fast lane.
Like the amazing music, fashions, loves and dreams that the decade spawned, not much of it lasted beyond the end of the long and winding road. But before it faded into the dark days of war, oppression and the grim realisation that the road was becoming much harder, it delivered on its promise in so many wonderful ways.
This then is the story of one such ride. Kick-started by the straight-laced oppression of the fifties and the dying traditions of the Victorian era, it begins early – right at the beginning of the decade – and follows the ups and downs, the lessons often so painfully learned, the knowledge gained, the joy and despair of those heady times and the life it led to.
It is a personal narrative for sure, but it is also an hilarious and often bitter-sweet look at the period when the youth of the whole world was finding out what the hell it was about and doing it at a hundred miles an hour!!
Alan Wheatley is a high school teacher and has also taught at tertiary level for more than twenty years. Before teaching, he spent 23 years in broadcasting and journalism. This is his first novel, designed initially to be a memoir for his son. Hopefully you will enjoy it too.
