Kurzbeschreibung

The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter, and first published by Frederick Warne & Co. in July 1909. After two full-length tales about rabbits, Potter had grown weary of the subject and was reluctant to write another. She realized however that children most enjoyed her rabbit stories and pictures, and so reached back to characters and plot elements from The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) and The Tale of Benjamin Bunny (1904) to create The Flopsy Bunnies. A semi-formal garden of archways and flowerbeds in Wales at the home of her uncle and aunt became the background for the illustrations.

In The Flopsy Bunnies, Benjamin Bunny and his cousin Flopsy are the parents of six young rabbits called simply The Flopsy Bunnies. The story concerns how the Flopsy Bunnies, while raiding a rubbish heap of rotting vegetables, fall asleep and are captured by Mr. McGregor who places them in a sack. While McGregor is distracted, the six are freed by Thomasina Tittlemouse, a woodmouse, and the sack filled with rotten vegetables by Benjamin and Flopsy. At home, Mr. McGregor proudly presents the sack to his wife, but receives a sharp scolding when she discovers its actual content.

Modern critical commentary varies. One critic points out that the faces of the rabbits are expressionless while another argues that the cock of an ear or the position of a tail conveys what the faces lack. One critic believes the tale lacks the vitality of The Tale of Peter Rabbit which sprang from a picture and story letter to a child. Most agree though that the depictions of the garden are exquisite and some of the finest illustrations Potter created.

The book includes original illustrations by Beatrix Potter.

Synopsis

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Good Book About Growing-Up and Responsibility 13. März 2010

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
In this adventure, the iconic Benjamin Bunny has grow up and has married his cousin Flopsy (sister of the famous Peter Rabbit). A little unAmerican, I know, but the story is presented very well with excellent, colorful illustrations. The story begins by showing how Benjamin does everything he can to make sure that his little baby bunny children are fed, even if that means going into the dreaded Mr. McGregor's garden. When tragedy strikes, and the little bunnies go missing, Benjamin and Flopsy do everything they can to find their children.

The tale has a happy ending, and the bad Mr. McGregor gets nothing. I believe that both children and parents will enjoy this tale.

My children loved this book 30 years ago, and i remember them learning the word "soporific" from the story. Now, these beautifully illustrated Beatrix Potter books are gifts for my grandchildren, who love them. I saved all of my own children's B. Potter books, so I have a set at my home, and the grandchildren have them at their homes. We read them every time they come over. Wonderful children's literature!

There are stories that touch you as a child, stories you never get bored or grow out of and stories that still as an adult are able to bring a smile to your face. I was happy to read and review this book in the process of broadening the site to include a wider variety of books for all ages.

This tale about Benjamin Rabbit's children known as the flopsy bunnies is an easy read for children of all ages. The flopsy bunnies along with Benjamin and Flopsy have ventured out to the rubbish tip at the end of Mr McGregor's garden. They are captured by Mr McGregor and are destined to end up in a pie. However with the help from a friend they escape the pot and there is a happy ending.

This copy of the story is accompanied with the original illustrations also by Beatrix Potter. I remember my copy as a child was a small book with a white cover. This copy is a pink copy slightly larger than the edition I had as a child. I find the slightly larger print in this copy would be perfect for a child.

Who the hell reads this to their kids?

My two year old picked this book out for me to read to her. Even if I looked past the fact that the rabbit married his cousin, or that they were so poor they had to get food from the dump, when the baby rabbits were stuffed in a bag to be eaten...allow me to paint the picture;

"Mr McGregor threw down the sack on the stone floor in a way that would have been extremely painful to the Flopsy Bunnies, if they happened to have been inside it"... followed by "I shall skin them and cut off their heads"... no, I'm sorry, I will not read a story like this to my children.

The Flopsy Bunnies, as well as Squirrel Nutkin and The Tale of Jeremy Fisher, is my favorite Beatrix Potter book. I love that they lead lives of "cheerful improvidence". Dear, sweet pictures abound in this lovely, little book.
